OG '89 RG550 owner looking for something similar

Hi all, first post here!

I've owned an RG550 with maple neck since '89 and it's always been an amazing guitar for me. Unfortunately, it has seen better days and needs a bit of work... but that's a story for another day. My problem is this: Over the past decade or so, I strayed from Ibanez and have owned everything from a Les Paul (still have one of these) to an American strat. However, I could never really find that "feel" that the RG550 has that just gives me all the inspiration in the world to sit down and jam for hours. I've only recently realized that it's probably because Ibanez was my first guitar love and I should really think of getting a new one. First thing I started searching was for JEM's and since I would have to save up and buy one of those, I decided to purchase a 2000 JS100 from craigslist and while that axe is pretty cool (and I've always wanted a JS series) the trem on that sucker (lo-trs II) is the worst thing on earth.

That being said, I've decided to look into something a bit more like my RG550 and I've come across the RG450m. My question, is this guitar worth a crap? as a long time RG550 user, will I feel like I'm playing something low grade? Any suggestions for an Ibanez similar to the RG550?

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any replies!

just keep an eye out for the real deal, an older 550. The 450 is close but not the same. Used 550s have kept their value but you find a good one for $300-$400 every now and then, just takes work to look and communicate with the sellers. Music Go Round and guitar center used get them in from time to time too.

Re: OG '89 RG550 owner looking for something similar

I've been thinking about that, as well, but I would reeeeaallly like something new, if possible. I know that there is not much chance of finding a newer Ibanez to rival the quality of an older RG550 but I thought if anyone would know of a decent newer model, it would be you guys on this site haha

In any case, thanks for the reply and the advice!

Look no further than the RG655! All of the best (imo) features the RG series has to offer...in one package! Great thin Wizard neck, plus the titanium reinforcement rod. Dimarzio's, and an original Edge. It's basically your RG550, but reinforced & updated. It's also priced very well!

The RG655 DOEEES look pretty sweet. Was considering looking into that one but really really wish there was a maple neck option. Something about playing an RG with a maple neck just does ALL THE THINGS for me haha

Good point, man. It's a shame it's only available in rosewood so far. I'm witcha on preferring maple boards.

Man, most guitarists look at me like I'm a crazy man when I tell them I prefer maple haha Clearly, they did NOT have a 550 at some point in their lives

You may want to look for an RG1550.
Some have the Edge Pro, others the EZ, (I have the EP) but it's a good solid guitar that's similar to the 550. Maple neck too.
The neck, however, is a bit 'beefier' than the original RG550 and the RG655.
That being said, it's not uncomfortable.
I have a 1990 RG550 (my favorite) and a 2009 RG1550.
I have small hands and don't have any trouble on the slightly thicker 1550. I actually find it easier to play barre chords on the 1550 since there's a bit more 'meat' to get a grip on. For fast stuff; the 550 is a easier, but it's not like it's difficult on the 1550.
Just a thought. I don't think they make them anymore but I'm sure there are still some floating around in music stores.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've actually never seen or heard of that model before and it looks pretty awesome. Will def check around for a used one!

This +100000

To the OP:

I have a 1550 also (EZ version) and it is one NICE axe. Also, if you want to find a used one, I saw one used (EP) version on Ishibashi's website.

Here:

YES, they do ship overseas

Also, if you can find one used, The RG2450 is Maple board with pickguard and ghost sharktooth inlays

Re: OG '89 RG550 owner looking for something similar

If a used 550 is out of the question and a maple neck is definitely a must then yeah a used 1550 would be the closest thing, but i still think the RG655 would be the better guitar, sure its a rosewood fretboard but it has way better pick ups and the original Edge them you so liked on your 550.

The EZ is not a bad bridge man. I don't get all this hate for it.

Re: OG '89 RG550 owner looking for something similar

@MatiasTolkki

Awesome! Thanks for the link. I've not really familiarized myself with that model and it's looking like it might be a winner for what I'm looking for.

@Rafafas

I'm always down for another 550 but finding them in the shape that I'm looking for can be a bit trying. I would LOVE to have something spanking brand new and be able to break it in all my own but if something like the 450 isnt going to hold snuff and end up being a waste of money than so be it! haha

I have a feeling I will be looking out for 655's as well. from what I can tell, they seem like pretty freakin stellar axes so Im adding those to keep an eye out for, as well. Thanks!!

I don't think its a bad bridge, but IT IS different than the original Edge that was on his 550, also is the 1550 still in production?

There's a white one, the 1550MV, that's still available over here but it's a synchroniZR trem iirc. The old EP/EZ ones are out of production.
