Opinions on early 90s Rg470

I stumbled across a cheap rg470 on craigslist and i asked the guy a few questions and it turned out this might be a cool guitar. Early 90s (he says 92) before the AANJ, seems to be in pretty good shape. I am unfamiliar with the 470s, but i own an old 550....should this guitar be pretty much the same build quality? I am basically just looking for another cool old-school ibanez to add to my collection, should i pick this up and throw some cool dimarzios in it (its cheap, $200), or look elsewhere? one thing i noticed on the info i could find on the 470s on google is that they have a different neck joint than the scarf joint on my 550....any opinions?

It should be a MIJ model, and probably has an original Edge. Quality wise, it's on-par with the 550s and 570s, with a few minor differences--no barrel jack, it's got a plate.

sounds like its a good deal to me....im going to go check it out tomorrow after work, unless there is something seriously wrong with the guitar (i.e. neck) it looks like im going to pick it up. Im thinking of going with an evo set with an HS-2 in the middle...or maybe a breed set (i like the 7 string version, never tried the 6)

I have a '92 470. Its almost exactly like the 570 just with minor details like the input jack is different, non matching headstock, and it doesn't have the countour around the square heel. Its in the same league as the 570s and 550s. I would jump on it if I were you if the price is right

Didn't the 4xx guitars have the TRS trem though? I thoought that was the main differentiator against the 5xx with the Edge.

You might want to check it out in the catalogues.

Only on the late 90s-2000 MIJ 470s (I think), they still had the 550 necks though.

Re: Opinions on early 90s Rg470

92/93 were MIJ with Edge trems, similar to 570s with the exception of non-contoured heel and plate jack. 94-96 were MIK with LO-TRS II trem (rubbish), 97-02 were MIJ with LO-TRS (perfectly decent trem). 03 had an Edge Pro and MIJ.

Re: Opinions on early 90s Rg470

picked it up yesterday.....talked the guy down to $150. THE THING WAS FILTHY GROSS!!!!!!!!

after about 2-3 hours with some guitar polish, soapy water and a toothbrush i got all the gunk and rust off of the bridge and pickups. This guitar wasnt played very much but it seems like it was played hard and put away wet often (lol)

its a dark blue color, all stock 1992 model.....original edge, v7/s1/v8 pups, non contoured heel (im iffy on that, i might try and get a cheap 570 body on evilbay).

After getting it properly setup and cleaned it plays every bit as good as any of my other ibby guitars, in the end im happy with it......ordering new pickups and knobs at the moment (going green......evolution h-s-h set and matching knobs, switch, and pickup rings). pics soon

Good to hear it turned out to be a good deal.

You could always contour the heel yourself?

Re: Opinions on early 90s Rg470

Took me awhile to find my camera (and batteries lol)

Got it in mid transformation right now.......just ordered the matching humbuckers to throw in there (decided to go with a breed set)

Right now the middle pickup is the stock S1 with a dimarzio cover......any suggestion on a good single coil (i am thinking area 67 might be a good contrast to get a wide variety of tones on the ole 5-way toggle)

Man, that green is ghastly on the blue...Are you going to replace all of that green?
