Original RG550, RG570, RG750 and RG770 pickups questions

I'm close to buying an RG from 1987-1991, or perhaps one of the original JEMs (and I'm enjoying the shopping experience!). Can I get some opinions on the original pickups that came with these guitars?

I prefer vintage pickups, so I may have to swap whatever is in them anyway, but I'm really curious to hear some opinions on the original equipment. Many of the shredders I have played have absolute crap for pickups, so I'm curious what Ibanez put in these originally.

Thanks,

Joe Lavely

like so many other pickups the original pickups in my 92 saber and rg have mellowed a bit with age so i like them more now than i did when they were new...they're ok for stock pickups but really you'll have to listen to them and judge for yourself as everyone hears these things differently...d.m.

Re: Original RG550, RG570, RG750 and RG770 pickups questions

I got rid of all my RG pickups and replaced them with Dimarzios.
The JEM already have good sounding Dimarzios in them so they were all set when I got them.
I have a full array of different sounds from Vintage PAF and Strat tones all the way to more modern tones.

I agree with diablo. You need to see if you like them yourself. However, imo the V1/S1/V2 setup is MUCH better than the V7/S1/V8. The V1/V2s arent as muddy and actually have some decent sounds in them. However, if yours have the IBZ/USA F1/C2/F2 or F3/C2/F4, KEEP THEM. I might switch the F4 into the neck position, but the IBZ USA pups are really really nice sounding (and made by Dimarzio). They are MUCH better than the current Dimarzio IBZs imo. For the sounds I want anyway they fit what I want (I currently sticking F2/F4 into my RG550, still looking for a C2)

Re: Original RG550, RG570, RG750 and RG770 pickups questions

The 550 pups are dimarzio designed so the quality is there even if they do not suit your taste.
I spent the weekend in my local guitar store with my 550 trying all guitars against it. I tried top end strats and les Paul s, jem and prestige rg3250, an EVH frankenthing and an ernie ball music man.
the only guitars that compared in sound that suited my taste were the strat in neck position, and the EVH. Though neither really had the presence in bridge position.
the muddyness of my rg is what I would describe as 'untamed' and I like it that way less so in clean(which is where the strat wins at the neck) definitely under insane distortion is where the untamed natyre appeals to me more than any other guitar in the store.
I played through an EVH head and cab which taught me that I did not need a better guitar set up but instead I needed to buy this amp!!!!
Not one guitar played as well as my rg550 as far as feel goes and never has.
This is all just my opinion based on very recent trails but Hope this helps

I wish people would stop spreading this myth!!!! The 5xx pickups were NOT made by DiMarzio!!!!!!!!

The 7xx series IBZ/USA ones were made by DiMarzio.

Re: Original RG550, RG570, RG750 and RG770 pickups questions

I never said made, I said designed, but I thanks for the heads up I appreciate it really.
I got my info from the ibanez wiki thing about the vintage7.
So maybe this is where this confusion comes from?
Or I am a nugget and still do not know how to read

either way my opinions on my experience from the weekend stands.
