Painting Headstocks and putting decals

I have an Ibanez GRX40 which has a maple headstock and a "GIO" word on it. I wanna paint the headstock black and put an ibanez logo with the V that Rgs have. I was wondering if i could use normal spray cans to paint it. Sorry coz i dont have any experience with paint. And about the new logo, where can i find the ibanez logo so that i can send it to a decal shop to be made? And will the decal stick properly to the painted headstock without seeing the edges and all? I need all this advice from people who has done this before.

Re: Painting Headstocks and putting decals

I had my freind who is a painter to make me a sticker which I stuck on and used ALOT of clear, I put a fair few spray coats of clear on and then a heavy coat so the clear was higher than the sticker, then I sanded off the clear ontop of the sticker flush with the rest of the clear and then put more spray coats and another heavy coat on then light sanded, buffed etc.

Theres alot of people on here with more experirence with this than me tho so wait for some improvements on my method. Theres also allready alot threads on this so do a search as well.

BTW, Im a multimedia student so I pretty easily made the logo myself in .bmp form and then imported it into the machine.

Re: Painting Headstocks and putting decals

It is possible - though I personally wouldn't try to paint an entire guitar again, but I have had decent results with headstocks. I'd recommend checking out the e-book from http://www.paintyourownguitar.com

Another technique I've seen used if you want to cut out the primer/paint stage is using a headstock "overlay" by taking an oversized piece of black vinyl and cutting it with a scalpel or craft knife to fit the headstock face, then applying the decal and clear coat.

Re: Painting Headstocks and putting decals

So after i paint the headstock, i spray clear on it or do i put the decal 1st then put clear on it?

By the way, can anyone give me the ibanez logo with the exact dimensions?

You'd normally go primer->paint->decal->clear

I just suggested you put a black vinyl overlay on the headstock to take out the primer and paint stage.

Re: Painting Headstocks and putting decals

okay guys, i just got the logo and now i wanna measure the exact dimensions so that i can tell my decal shop. I measured the two tips of the swoosh logo and it came to 13.2cm. Anyone has more accurate measurements?
