peavey Wolfgang

I got me a black Peavey Wolfgang standard recently and i just wanted to say how suprised i was with it. Seeing as its EVH's signature i was expecting its design to be geared towards making shred style stuff easier to play - in much the same way Jems are for example - BUT to my surprise it has the thickest neck profile i've come across - which makes Satriani style legato a NIGHTMARE, the upper fret access is terrible despite some profiling on the heal joint, the floyd only works one way (though it is possible to float it, it isn't meant to be and this compromises the action - hence the D-tuna, though mine doesn't have one) and because of the way the bridge is designed its impossible to achieve the same low and even action i set my Jap Ibanez guitars up for. The fret work isn't 'Ibanez' good either...

LUCKILY, i didn't buy it with lead playing in mind, i'm a massive fan of early Muse and i already had a translucent cherry red Bass Collection SB310 like what Chris, the bass player was mainly gigging during the Showbiz tour and i wanted to add the black Wolfgang as it was what Matt Bellamy was mainly gigging at the time, thus completing my little Muse collection. The Wolfy is very pretty and has a completely different voice to my other guitars, so i'm still very pleased with it despite the suprising aspects of its design.

I'm picking up my Parker Fly tomorrow!! YYYEEEEEHHHAAAAWWWWW!!

Re: peavey Wolfgang

that's disappointing about the wolfgang. I always assumed it would be an easy shredder too.

Re: peavey Wolfgang

I'd say that "easy shredding" is a matter of comfort to the individual. It's basically the same neck profile Eddie has used for years with Music Man and Peavey, and he's done okay. Even if you look at a lot of the older pics of his guitars, they all have huge thick necks. I have a ton of old wizard necks, but when I got ahold of my Wolfgang, I couldn't believe how comfortable it was for being a thick neck.

Re: peavey Wolfgang

I had a Wolfgang Special FM for a while. It had a flat maple top and volume knob only. It was pretty much the Peavey version of the EB/MM EVH. It was an extremely versatile guitar and was extremely easy for me to play. The asymmetrical neck shape took a little bit of geting used to, but became very comfortable after a while. I found shredding on it to be quite natural, actually.

But, to each his own. Not every guitar is made to play perfectly for everyone.

Re: peavey Wolfgang

Wolfgangs are awesome. I just sold one and I still have one. They are extremely versatile. I think they are similar to Les Pauls, but more versatile. I love the neck, the guitar and the neck seem so small. I want a Custom Shop. I don't think he should have ever left Peavey. I think he left for money. Those guitars are great and they look great, I can't believe he designed that guitar.

Re: peavey Wolfgang

Never really cared much for the Wolfgangs. I am intrigued though by the newer HP Specials. Seems like they took the best features of the Wolfgangs and improved the design. I like the floating trem and the coil-tap for the twin buckers - makes the guitar much more versatile...

Wrong or right, I still have the perception that Peavey's are inferior quality wise though. For those of you who own Peavey's and other brands, what are your experiences and thoughts with regards to quality?

Re: peavey Wolfgang

The quality of a company is all pretty relative, I think. I mean I have picked up Ibanez models from Korea and Indonesia and was disgusted with the quality, but the Jap Ibanez's are tops to me. My Wolfie is an EXP, and I'll take the Korean Wolfgang over a Korean Ibanez (except maybe the Prestiges).

Re: peavey Wolfgang

I think the Peavey Wolfgang neck profile is my favorite neck profile 2nd only to the Ultra neck profile of my RG8570M and RGT3120.

I've had a couple and they're real nice....I couldn't get used to the neck, for me I equated it to a baseball bat.:0
