PGM300RE or PGM401?

Hi everyone! I'm new to jemsite and just wanted to know which of these guitars would be a better choice? I know it can be very opinion based but thats exactly what i wanna hear.

I'm a fan of Paul Gilbert so either guitar would be great, but as a fan i would go for the pgm401 since he isnt really using trems anyway.

Im just not entirely sure on which one to go for because the pgm300 has the reverse headstock and lo pro edge. While i totally dig the fixed bridge and pickup config on the 401. Real hard choice....
Currently im leaning more towards the 401 since ive been reading around that ppl hate the pgm300 reissue cause of what happened with polls and the pgm200 and pgm800 not winning and all I've also read that it could be obtained used for cheap anyway, but i kinda want a New guitar...
Well some opinions either way would be nice. Thanks guys.

Re: PGM300RE or PGM401?

They are very different guitars.......... it is a tough choice....

That said, if it were me, I would be going the 401. But that's because I have a 550 that realitically is almost the 300RE without the dimarzio's, reverse headstock and paint job.

Both are great guitars, I think it would get down to what you want. If you already have a MIJ Ibby with a trem, a fixed bridge model would make sense.

Also bare in mind that the 401's pickups (Air Classics) are more vintage and have lower output than the 300's PAF Pro's..... The 401 is also an ash body, whilst the 300RE is basswood.

They will produce very different sounds.

Good luck with the choice, either one will be an awesome axe, make sure you post pictures!!!

I have actually been wondering about the pick up change in the pgm401. Oh and the fact that it has medium frets as opposed to jumbo frets. Are the frets too different from each other?

Re: PGM300RE or PGM401?

It's noticeable.

AussiePGFan makes a pretty good point: it are pretty different guitars. Both RG style guitars with a maple neck and without a tone pot, but that's about it.
First of all I wouldn't care about what other people think about the PGM300RE winning the reissue contest, if you like the PGM300 and want a new one, it's your chance. Second of all I wouldn't care about what Paul Gilbert plays, you're the one that's buying and playing the guitar and if you think you'll need a guitar with a trem, buy one.
That's also the whole point basically: if you like 'em both, buy the guitar you need. You want to buy a PGM (which I can understand being a PGM owner myself ) and right now you have the luxury of being able to choose from two pretty different (and equally great) guitars. Compare the specs, try to play them both and make your decision.

I don't hate the 300RE because of the poll. I don't hate it at all, really. I just prefer my PGM's as hardtails. It was more shock than anger that the 300 won.

Depending upon what one considers the neck of the guitar, the 301 has a maple fingerboard with a maple neck and the 401 has a rosewood fingerboard with a maple neck and that contributes to the guitars sounding different, at least to my ears. Also consider that the 300 has a basswood body, the 401 has an ash body and the bridges also affect the sound to some degree (again in my ears).

If you think you'll eventually want both, I would get the 300 now because it's a limited edition whereas the 401 is not.

Re: PGM300RE or PGM401?

I think you may have hit on something, Jack. If you think about it, the 300 is the only other PGM with a full-on Floyd-style trem. The 400 is the old Fender-style trem and the rest all hardtails. I wonder if the 300 won simply because it had a true floating trem?
I'd probably go for the 300 if it were me. I'm might get a 301 myself eventually since Ibanez has opted to make a front-routed HSH RG this year.

So, in this case, with 'maple neck' I probably mean the neck sans fingerboard, but what would I know? The point was that the guitars are not very alike apart from some obvious things. If were going to be picky, I can also add to this that the necks are not just maple, it's a maple/walnut laminate.

PGM300RE or PGM401?

The floating trem is one of the reasons the pgm300 really got my attention. I've never actually tried a pgm before, but i played plenty of RG and S prestige and the necks are just amazing. Well if the pgm401 isnt too limited then i might just pull the trigger on a pgm300RE and just save up for a pgm401 later on down the road. (since i wouldnt mind having both ) Just gotta wait around a month to finally be able to order In a way it gives more time to decide and pull my hair out until i can order Tone wise i really wouldnt hear it..well through youtube videos. i would have to play both guitars side by side to hear major differences, but i do understand the basswood vs ash oh and of course the PAF pros vs the Classics. I wouldnt mind testing them out but no store seems to have either guitar in stock in this damn city haha

Re: PGM300RE or PGM401?

Personally, I would get the 300RE. As mentioned, it's a limited run and the only PGM with a Floyd-type trem (except for the 100). At first, I was also a little surprised that it won the voting, but don't forget, it was never offered in the US (officially).

And the smaller frets on the 401 kill it for me.
