Picked up a mid 80's CUSTOM MADE S Series

I just picked up this mid 80's S-Series guitar. It's apparently a custom made. I bought from Guitar center here in Houston for about 1,000.00$. I've been trying to find some info on the guitars history, but I haven't had too much luck. They guy from guitar center said that this S- series guitar was made for and owned by Alex Skolnik of Testament. They picked it up from a collector just the day before. I'm trying to verify it's history. Anyways, here are some pics. Any info would be great. The serial number is F209569. It's got all the nobs and stuff, I just took them off to try and figure out what that teal colored stuff was put on for...

Here's the link to the pics..

thanks for any help,
Aaron

It wasn't custom made. They ALL said that on the fret 21 plaque in that time period. That's probably the most uncool thing on the guitar!

Having said that, these are great axes. Yours was made in 1992, and has a mahogany body (like most Sabres). It probably has the sharktooth inlays, making it a LTD with a wizard neck. DiMarzio made the pickups, which are custom for Ibanez but kinda similar to a Tone Zone (F2), a HS2 (C2), and a Breed (F1). Search on Sabre and you'll get lots more.

The bad news: it's worth a few hundred bucks; you way overpaid at a thousand! They didn't even cost that *new*. Alex played one for a bit, but I never heard of one custom made for him; I think the GC guy was full of it and I would return it and never go back there. These go on eBay all the time for around $300.

Agreed. Unless there a *proved* firm provenance to Skolnick, or something about the guitar itself proves it was a true custom made for him, then it's just another S Series.

It's got the oval pearl inlays. and the F2 pickups.

IIRC, most oval inlays were on flamed finishes, not solids, but I could be wrong. I know I had such a one, but it was an 89. I wonder if there was a switch?

Yeah - offer them 3 or 4 bills for it and tell them we think they're nimrods. ;-)

It's a '92 S540 in Cayman Green. Maple neck, and the oval abalone inlays were standard. Nothing special. I sold 3 or 4 identical guitars when they were brand new. Nice, but...definitely NOT worth $1K.

That's the same guitar as mine, but mine doesn't say S-Series on the head stock.

I'd have to agree with everyone here.
Man that sucks. I would hate this to happen to me.

Go back, return the guitar, get your money back. Buy from somewhere else, and you should be able to return with basically the same guitar but with more money in your pocket.

wil..
