Pickup height advice???

As most of you already now I recently purchased an RG1421F not to long ago and I have a question about the pups. As of now I still have the stock V6's and I was wondering what would be an appropriate height for each pup for a good solid hard rock/metal sound. I use the bridge for the dirty and the neck for my clean. I know it's kinda of a personal preference really but I would definitely appreciate some input. Thanks!!!

Re: Pickup height advice???

wind them down till they're really thin and then wind them up until they sound good. keep winding them up until they start sounding crappy again, and then back them off a bit.

that's the way I do it but, as you say, they'll depend on lots of things, strings, guitar, amp, and not least the player.

Re: Pickup height advice???

If I could add anything to abracadabra's advice, it'd be:

Bring them up REALLY close and hit an open string, and listen to what they do to the tuning stability of the note when they're that close. It totally screws it up. Then, back the pickups down until the horror stops. If you need more gain, add it electronically instead of jacking up your pickups. When adjusting pickup height, always use your ears rather than your eyes: if your ears are telling you that the pickups are screwing with your tone and tuning (and giving you a weird vibrato effect you didn't ask for), listen to them! I don't mean to be a namedropper but I was having a conversation with Roger Mayer about big misconceptions in guitar a few weeks ago and he said this was one thing that players mess up a LOT by not thinking enough about it, and thinking that closer = better.
