Pickup Rings Needed For RG3120

It seems like all RG's I see are direct mount, no pickup rings. Will pickup rings not fit? The neck pickup on my 3120 is so close to the neck I'm not sure there is room for the ring. Have any of you put the rings on your direct mount guitars? If so, any leads where I could find cosmo black metal rings?

Just out of curiosity: why would you want to put on rings if people pay extra not to have them?

Please excuse my ignorance, I'm fairly new to Ibanez, but what do you mean people pay extra not to have the rings? Why pay extra and other than cosmetic appeal one way or the other what's the difference? For me its just easier to mount and adjust pickups when in rings. I put a new one in yesterday and had to replace the tiny direct mount screws and that was a bitch just to find some small enough. Is it considered bad form to use rings on a Prestige and do you think it would hurt resale value?

generally changing something like this would decrease resale value. whereas installing better pickups, customising pickguards and pots increase value. more than likely because the latter are easily reverted.

Re: Pickup Rings Needed For RG3120

Direct-mount pickups, such as in the RG3120, need precise routing of the body. Many people consider this beneficial for the sound, plus it is way more labor-intensive than to just cut a square hole and hang the pickup into that cavity with a pickup ring. Direct-mount pickups are basically a more sophisticated (which does not mean easier) method of mounting pickups, both technically as well as aestetically.

To put in pickup rings, you have to drill holes for the ring mounting screws into the top, have you considered that? That will definitely screw up the re-sale value .

Re: Pickup Rings Needed For RG3120

After reading the responses and thinking about it I will forget about the rings. I do need to find some new foam though so the pickups sit right. The bridge pickup is not raising up and sits at an angle. Any suggestions on where to get foam or another product that will work?
