Pickups for Mahogany RG Prestige

Looking to upgrade the crap V7/V8 pickups in my Mahogany RG2020xtb w/ piezo.
My budget is around $100, so preferably $50-60 per pickup.

For the bridge, I'm looking for something that'll handle thrash and some shred. Something along the lines of an EMG, but less compressed. Tones I like are Testament, Metallica, Vai, Petrucci.

For the neck, I need something that'll handle leads with OD. I'd also like it to have good cleans, nothing spectacular, but good. I want an ultra smooth pickup that could get some of these tones here:

This would be another example of what I'm looking for as well:

I assume that he's using Dimarzios, but I'm open to any passive pickup options.

in all seriousness, i think you should try dimarzio super distortion, or an emg 85.
the 85 has a rounder sound to it, imho.

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG Prestige

I would actually recommend something along the lines of EMG81/60 with 18V mod. I think 81 sounds better than 85 in mahogany.

Probably wanna stay away from Evo2 in mahogany.

Seymour Duncan JB, or any of the Customs will work great, too. Especially Custom Custom. 59 or Jazz is a winner in the neck.

For your budget, Bill Lawrences would work perfect. L-500XL in bridge and 500L in neck.

EDIT: Oh yeah, Duncan Distortion is an awesome pickup. Probably one of my favorites that Duncan makes.

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG Prestige

^ What would the L-500XL compare like to the Distortion? I have EMGs in two of my guitars, and i'm thinking of trying something a little different.

What's wrong with the Evo2 in mahogany?

Pretty similar.

I don't think it has the bite that you're looking for.

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG Prestige

I see, to me the Dimarzios seem more aimed at shred type tones particularly the Evo.

Is the L-500XL splittable? Also what do you recommend for a neck pup?

The Evo and Evo2 are very different.

I'm pretty sure the L-500XL is splittable, I've only played it, not installed it. But I can't imagine why it's not, considering it is a dual coil humbucker. Hopefully it has 4 leads!

With it I would recommend a L-500L with what you're going for.

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG Prestige

What's the L-500L like? Does it have good cleans as well as a smooth OD tone for solos in neck position?

It is an all around very versatile aggressive humbucker. Not as aggressive as the L-500XL.

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG Prestige

How does it compare to a Dimarzio Air Norton? I've received many recommendations over on HC for an Air Norton in the neck, and I haven't heard too much about the L-500L

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG Prestige

Air Norton is a very smooth, rounded lead sound.

Not very Metallica, Testament, or Vai, but very Petrucci.
