Pickups for RG?

I just recently bought an Ibanez RG321MH. I bought it with the intentions of changing the pickups and refinishing the guitar. I play mostly hard rock, with a little bit of a metallish sound to it. I was thinking about putting an EMG 81/85 set to replace the stock ones, but now from looking at forums, I'mw worried that the 81 may sound too thin. I'd also like some opinions about the EMG 60 if possible. Thanks!

Re: Pickups for RG?

I've been considering that as an option myself, though I hear you need a 9v battery for it which may require some routing in the back of the body and pretty much all the electronics replaced because they require certain pots and the pickups have these special connectors on them. Also not sure if they're compatible with the 5-way on 321's. If you're paying someone else to install it it'll cost a lot.

Re: Pickups for RG?

The pickups come with the pots and everything that you will need pretty much. The 5 way switch could be an issue, but it should be a big problem to switch it out with a 3 way. I've also been looking into and EMG 89 for the neck becuase your supposed to be able to get single coil tones out of it as well as humbucking.

Oh I see. Well in that case if you're prepared to go through whatever hassle then go for it! Personally I like the range of tones from the 5 way and will probably stick to getting Duncans/DiMarzios

Re: Pickups for RG?

It's all about personal opinion. I have an EMG 81/S/85 combo in my RG370DX and it is sooo sweet. I thought about putting EMGs in my RG321 as well but I really like the way that the body resonates so I think I'm going to stick with passive pickups for this guitar.

Oh, and if you get EMGs new then they will come with everything you need (input jack, new pots, pickups, wires, etc.) and the only thing that you might need would be a 3 way switch, but they are very inexpensive.

I used to have EMG 81/85 in my old iceman, too much hassle with active pickups IMO. I got Invaders and I like them alot better they sound more natural and they are cheaper.

Re: Pickups for RG?

I've never had any problems with the EMGs in my RG. I would just say that you should have a professional do the installation...one who has actually done it before would be a plus. Of course, they ARE more expensive pickups than Dimarzios or Duncans but they are totally worth it IMO. Of course, I only need them in one guitar because I like my tone to change from guitar to guitar.

Re: Pickups for RG?

nah, EMG doesnt suits RG. i will definately prefer dimarzio. X2N is perfect for high gain OD setting. imo, its better than EMG81. other, try evolution or EVO2. but hey, this is just my opinion. the decision is yours

Re: Pickups for RG?

I've got an EMG 85 in my basswood RG and it sounds fantastic. Go that an 89 so you can get the single coil and humbucker sound. Be very nice indeed.

You can fit the battery in the rear electronics cavity quite easily. You just use the foam that comes in the box to pad it.

I also have an 81 in my alder bodied RG style custom, and it sounds a lot fatter than I thought it would. If it's mahogany that you are putting the pickup in to I think the 81 willl still be good too in the bridge position.

Re: Pickups for RG?

I absolutely LOVE the EMG 85 pickup in the neck. It gives you awesome lead tones as well as great cleans. I dunno how it would be in the bridge but the dudes of Shadow's Fall put it there so it must not be too bad. The 89 sounds like it might be a good option as well but it's a more pricy pickup.

Re: Pickups for RG?

Alright that all sounds good. I believe I'm gonna go with an 81 in the bridge and an 89 in the neck. I'm quite sure I'll be happy with the 89, but if the 81 doesn't suit me, I may sell it and try the 85 in the neck. Does anyone have any advice on how I would install these with 2 tones and 1 master volume. I would have to add another hole because the 321 only has a master volume and tone, but I don't think it will be too much of a problem.

Re: Pickups for RG?

No idea, really. Of course, Ibanez guitars aren't designed for two tone knobs. Hell, I don't even use the one tone knob that I have; I just tweak my amp settings. Your best bet would probably be to check the official EMG website and if you don't see what you're looking for, then email their Tech and ask for a diagram.

Re: Pickups for RG?

You can put any pickups you want on that guitar, although I heard recently that EMGs won't directly retrofit into that model because it doesn't have pickup rings.
