Play in Original Edge Bridge.

Hi everyone, first post here with a short question..

I just bought myself an RG652AHM NGB. It's my first Prestige model and first 'expensive guitar' so I'm thrilled to bits.

There's just a small issue with play in the Original Edge bridge. Lowering the tremolo arm (lowering pitch) and then releasing it slowly back to resting point will leave the guitar in an ever so slightly lower tuning than if you were to raise the bar and then let it fall to resting point.

The difference looks like 0.3 of a semitone on my tuner and is pretty much uniform across the strings, but it is still noticeable when playing along to a piece of music or backing track.

Is there anything I can tighten to prevent this?

If it's of any significance, it had a long trip from Japan over to the UK.

Thanks in advance

Congrats on your new guitar!

Did you lock the studs down? Another great thing to do is put a bit of lubricant on the studs where they contact the knife edges. Make sure the bridge is aligned like the pictures that Rich has up on his Ibanez Rules site.

Re: Play in Original Edge Bridge.

Sweet! That is a nice guitar! Congrats...

Make sure the trem is nice and level, especially after it's long trip to a new climate. The knife edges should be parallel to the strings and body, you can see them on the sides of the trem body. Seems to make a little difference in the trem going back to the exact same point.

I've had guitars that did that even after leveling and lubricating, so another habit I've developed is to always give the trem a little dip periodically when tuning... then after using the trem when playing. So I always leave it in the same position as when I tuned it. I hope that makes sense. Seems to help... but it's just a habit I developed from having less than perfect tremolos in the past.

It's probably that the studs aren't locked down, all Ibanez guitars I've bought from new have had them not locked down by default. I think they sent an allen key of the correct size in the case, for me.

Re: Play in Original Edge Bridge.

stretch (the strings) like your life depends on it, I do various torture methods on strings to get them to stay in pitch, and I do then a long time too. Lube your knife edges with Chapstick brand original Chapstick and graphite, lock your locking studs down, stretch the springs a bit by doing divebombs and pull ups, make sure to lock your nut down firmly but not too tight

Re: Play in Original Edge Bridge.

I have had the same problem on some old Floyd Rose Guitars, and the solutions were replacing the springs with new springs for more tension, or adding an extra spring or two.

Since your Guitar is new, a proper setup should do the trick.

If you don't get the problem solved, please spend the extra money, and get a professional setup. Otherwise you will never be happy with your Guitar.

Re: Play in Original Edge Bridge.

Thanks for all of your replies!

Thanks for pointing me in IbanezRules' direction, PBGas. I used to visit the site just to see the NAMM photos each year, but never dug deep into the tech help. There is a page on exactly this problem!

With regards to the locking studs, I tried fiddling with them but the allen key seemed to endlessly rotate and not loosen or tighten anything at all (yes I used the correct size key! :P)...I didn't even know they existed until the replies here!

The trem is angled slightly up from the body like it should be and the strings are stretched.

I think a professional setup is probably the best remedy.

Re: Play in Original Edge Bridge.

Glad you found some good info! We should all regularly thank Rich for his site!
They sometimes have those threads all the way up so when the allen key fits into the studlock, you will be turning for a while until it bottoms out.

No worries though, a good setup is always something that will help!

Congrats again on the new guitar!

Re: Play in Original Edge Bridge.

I've found that tightening the trem springs just ever so slightly will remedy this problem. My RG520 did this as well, it was just a small amount more tension on the springs and it holds in tune like a rock.
