Pop quiz for the experts: RG470 or RG570 you decide

Fellow Ibanez fans,

On an auction site I saw this guitar. It has no information on type / state / new or used, just the one photo.

I believe it is a used RG470, with a EMG in the bridge position... but of course I could be terribly wrong. Can all of you experts help me out?

Wilster

OK thanks.

So 550 neck means it does not have the original neck?

470 NP, the neck looks like the original to me though.

I have the same guitar in the same finish.

Should have a MIJ Wizard 2 neck, these are stamped from the factory as "550-2" for some reason. Most likely they're using "550" in place of "Wizard" for space reasons. Could be why the above poster said 550 neck...

It is just the neck they use. If you put a RG470 and a RG550 side by side from the same era, bodys and trems will be different but necks will be the same. Well, if they both had rosewood fingerboards that is.

Imagine if you where in charge of naming the different bodys and such in the factory. Why change the name of the neck if it is being used on different bodys. You would have a stack of 550 necks over there, and next to it a stack of 470 necks that where the exact same thing.

I have a 91 RG570. After taking the neck off, the body says 550 in the pocket. It is still a 570 because of the shark tooth inlays and binding on neck. The 570 body I have is no different than a 550 and in fact the body IS a 550. But with the neck the factory put on it the guitar is a 570.

I have removed at least 40 necks off Ibanez guitars for one reason or another. And I can say all this with a bit of elapsed knowledge that I am correct about the MIJ necks.

MIK & MII necks/bodys I am getting more familiar with as I have purchased a few in the last year. The newer RGs state a bit more info on headstock. And I am seeing different names for necks that are exactly the same.

No worries about your 470 penny finish guitar. It should have a 550 neck!

These are the original wizard profiles, not wizard 2, but they are 550 #2 necks.

My MIJ 470 is that way. 550 neck backstock I suppose, quality is all the same.

Sorry, but a late 90s RG470 doesn't have an original Wizard neck. I've played tons of them, and have 3 Org Wizards. They are not the same.

Better than the Korean or Indo W-2, sure, but they're still 19mm at the nut vs 17mm on a W-1.

Now the 1993 RG470, pre-MIK production, had a W-1. That is not what that guitar is though.

Here's the 1999 Ibanez catalog scan:
http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary/...t_id=237&now=4

Note the RG470 spec: Wizard II. This is the era that guitar is from, as it's the NP finish only offered in the late 90's.

Grab a caliper and measure at the first fret. Won't be an original wizard IMO. Hard to find Original wizard in an AANJ. Though I have never held one I heard they are around.

Anyone here have an Original wizard with an AANJ?

Thanks for the detailed replies.

One last question. Judging from the photo I believe it is a used 470, any ideas how old it is? I can purchase for 200/250 is that a reasonable price for a used 470?

Every RG5xx has a Wizard or "Super Wizard"(same spec, only with bubinga stripe) except the RG570 from 1995-1996(the dark ages lol) which has a W-2.

A 1994 RG550LTD will have a Wizard 1, no bubinga. A 1997 RG570 will have a Wizard 1, with bubinga.

New Penny was offered from 1998-2001, so it would be from one of those years.
