Is this possible to do? A project RG

Some of you more experienced guys can speak up if this sounds like it's not a good idea:

- get a good condition used RG (RG3xx-RG5xx) with a Wizard II or Wizard III neck

- shave neck so its closer in profile to a Wizard Premium or Wizard I (may have to file down some fret edges, too. Some of the Wizard III necks I've seen have been kinda rough on the sides)

- scallop frets 12-24

- swap pickups

= good sounding/playing custom guitar?!

Would there be any advantage to beginning with a higher series RG? It seems to me that the differences between RG7xx and RG3xx are just the quality of the neck workmanship and the electronics (which are going to be swapped out anyway).

Any other things I should consider?

Maybe this isn't even doable

Yup, you can shave the neck down

Not surprised why you'd want to, the Wizard II with binding are TERRIBLE.

RE: scalloping, make sure you have some experience first! Try it on crappy neck

Why not get a 5xx with wizard 1 or super wizard already on it? Seems like they're common, I found one cheap, '91 570 w/ bubinga super wizard. Same specs as a wiz1 IIAC.

There are some more important differences between the 3/4xx and the 5/6/7xx. The main difference is the type of hardware used on them. All of the 3xx and most of the 4xx have the Lo-Trs II, Edge Pro II, or the Edge III. All of which are bottom of the line bridges. The 3 and 4xx's will also have lower quality locking nuts and tuners.

With the 5/6/7xx, your automatically getting a high quality bridge (OE, LP. or EP). your also getting high-end Gotoh hardware on every guitar (nut, tuners, knobs, and strap buttons). You'll also get better potentiometers and a treble bleed cap on these guitars. the 3/4xx do not have the treble bleed. Obviously pickups are a subjective thing, but for the most part the INF pups in the 3/4xx's are considered inferior to the v-series in the 5/6xx's and the IBZusa's in the 7xx's.

If you get a 5xx or higher your already getting a Wizard neck. the '97-'02's had the Super Wizard that was even thinner than the original Wiz.

These days you can get an RG5/6/7xx for ridiculously low prices........it doesn't make much sense to spend good money modding a 3/4xx to match them. If prices go back up on the better guitars, then modding will start to make sense again.

Don't know why I thought mine was 91, actually it's 98. I wouldn't want it any thinner.

It's a small capacitor on the volume knob. it prevents loss of treble when you back off the volume.

Re: Is this possible to do? A project RG

Hmm, sounds like by starting with an RG5xx+ I may save myself some work.

I have found an RG570 from 1988, MIJ, with some chips in the body (can those be fixed easily?) and the condition is described as "good, not great" although supposedly the neck is like new.

Pickups look to be IBZ USA F2s and C2.

I may have to go see it in person.

Those pups are stock in 7xx models. Sounds like something I'd jump on for the right price if it's not rusty and pitted. Got pics?

What do you mean by "pitted"?

So those pickups are pretty good?

Pitting in the metal, mainly the bridge, it can get pretty nasty. Those pickups are made by Dimarzio and sound better than the V7/V8/S1 pickups that come with 5xx's. Does it have sharktooth inlays? What's the pickup configuration, HSH, SSH?

Dude, If that thing has Sharks teeth inlays........it's probably a 770. There's a good few of them floating around town that people have no idea what they are. If the price is right and the condition is decent (useable, fixable) I'd jump on it ASAP.

Do you have pics, or know where it is? If you want me to check it out for 'ya....let me know. And NO, I wouldn't in a million years try to buy it out from under 'ya.
