Problem with a RGA121 and D Activator-X's
I recently bought a pair of new DiMarzio D Activator-X pickups (DP 221 & DP 222) to replace the original pickups of an Ibanez RGA121 VLF, the V7 and V8. When installing the Activator-X, I had a bad surprise: the height of these pickups is higher than the original ones! They are actually taller than any pickups I have seen. Even by installing them as low as possible in the guitar, they are still way too high: their distance to the strings is only approx. 3 mm. Moreover, there is a note coming with the Activator-X, saying that their magnet structure is very powerful, and that they should be adjusted far enough from the strings...
It is clear that, even for "normal" pick-ups, the distance to the strings is too small. So I would like to ask you, did this already happen to anyone else? What solution did you find? One way would be to bring the guitar to a guitar maker, and have him lower the bottom of the "pickups holes". Meaning cutting off some wood...
I must say, this is really a pain. I hope these new pickups will be worth the trouble.
Thank you for any help.
