Project RG570 almost done!

Picked up this RG570 that was pretty beat up around the edges and decided to try another swirl.

I ordered pyramids from Jockomo and one hot pink Ibanez logo and one with a hot pink text and green tick to see what works better...

What I started with:

I still need to clearcoat it, but here it is today I'm pretty happy with it so far

Re: Project RG570 almost done!

first off....your 570 looked GREAT to start with. It would have taken some big "huevos" to make that decision.

I'm liking the swirl, but of course the best looking part is in the trem spring cavity and the headstock.......Isn't that the way it always is though. The best looking parts on a swirl are ALWAYS in the least seen area.......it's that way on mine too. The top is awesome, but the back and cavities blow the rest away!!!!

Ha! The before looks just like my Grey Nickel RG570. Awesome guitar! Sometimes I get a little bored with the silver but I don't want to hit it with a bad refinish job. Your swirl looks great though. Nice!

Nice work, and kudos for not putting a handle in it.

HAHA! It's funny that you like the cavities so much...they are actually double swirled (except for the tremolo cavity)...I got lazy and didn't wipe out the cavities w/ the naptha after my first swirl attempt. I agree though I really love the way the back came out and I wish it was the front

The guitar looks good in the before pic, but the edges were pretty messed up and some were chipped down to the wood, if it was in better shape I probably wouldn't have done it...

Thanks man...Yeah I think it was the grey nickel finish. It is a sweet playing guitar I really wouldn't have gone through all this work if it wasn't. I just didn't like all the chips in it...

Thanks! I never even considered putting a handle in it, then I would have had to do the lion's claw to make it look right...too much work!!!

Re: Project RG570 almost done!

True, most turn of the century non Prestige MIJ RGs had awful paint finishes. My old RG7620VK chipped easily and if you set my '01 RG570GN on a stand, put it under good light, and stand back to view it you can see the runs in the paint. Mine is in rotation as my main player currently. What an awesome guitar! Enjoy!

Re: Project RG570 almost done!

I'm really having a hard time even waiting for swirl to dry before I clear it AND then I still have to wait for the clear to cure!!! This is the best playing guitar I own, and I only played it for about 2 or 3 days before I started working on it...can't wait!

Re: Project RG570 almost done!

Since I'm OCD I had to wipe it off today...back to white w a misty coat of clear

I just couldn't get into the way the front turned out. If the front turned out like the back I probably would have kept it...I'm going to try to go for more compact lines... Probably going to try again tonight

Keeping the headstock the way it is...I like it

Just curious. How are the DIY folk learning this swirling technique?

A ton of searching, reading, experimenting, and doing.

Re: Project RG570 almost done!

Reminds me of my 'Passionfruit Swirl'....or the 'Retro Swirl'.

One of the better ones.
