Quality of Ibanez, Flame on..

Ok I made this video basically for this purpose.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RL0lSl9d2AE

To sorta prove a point, I have been seeing so many people complaining about quality of indonesian, korean, versus japan etc.

Now I am in no way saying that top of the line Ibanez dont have better detail work done to them, but im really kind of sick of the pretentious snobbery that the lower priced instruments get.

Before anyone even touches one its instantly oh the quality is going to suck, etc, POS trem, going to have to sink money into it to make it right etc.

In the above video I am using a stock RG120 that I painted, no locking nuts, no upgrades, and you can see with a little love and elbow grease it will stay in tune under heavy trem abuse. Sounds good, and plays fantastic. Did I have to put in a little time sure, but is that guitar now a awesome player? You betcha. Did it cost 2k? nope barely $200 lol.

What I am pleading is people stop with the snobbery and don't judge a book by its cover before you even try one.

Sorry to rant but its a pet peeve of mine. So discuss..

But, I read on the internet that the RG120 is for beginners. It can't sound good or be fun to play, it's for beginners! Sell it and buy a real guitar!

My local guitar center is blowing out rg120's for $119 right now. I wonder if they are being discontinued. BTW, nice job on the paint.

Re: Quality of Ibanez, Flame on..

no one wants to chime in how a $120 guitar stays perfectly in tune, must be the inferior trem..

Re: Quality of Ibanez, Flame on..

Half the stuff I've recorded was on a "cheap" Indo RG. I had to sell my 350's but man I miss them! Actually, I think the FAT10 bridge has an advantage in tuning stability over most floating trems as it only drops pitch. It's surface mounted so it doesn't go back and raise pitch, like a floating trem that's blocked.
In closing....

Re: Quality of Ibanez, Flame on..

Hey Bret,
Obviously, your 120 looks fabulous and sounds/plays very nicely!!

I can't speak for others, but I can say that I would never rip on any of the "beginner" guitars as a whole. Unfortunately, tuning is not the biggest problem they suffer. In fact, a relatively new RG1xx/2xx can be a VERY good instrument. The problem comes with prolonged use of the trem. The seats that ride on the posts are not hard enough to withstand the abuse your giving them over a long period of time. It may last a year, maybe two, but at some point it will wear enough to render the guitar unusable. Fortunately, it can be upgraded for not a lot of $$. Then the guitar can last years upon years if treated properly.

Yes, there's a lot of "snobbery" when it comes to guitars around here but take it lightly, The S-series snobs can rib me about my RG's as much as I can their S'. Don't even get me started on those 540 PII guys....there the WORST..........LOL.

In the end, I'm glad there all Ibanez's and there's a place for ALL of us Ibby-heads to get together and discuss ALL of our cool guitars.

Re: Quality of Ibanez, Flame on..

Most of the "snobbery" comes from genuine disappointment with cheap guitars. My first guitar was an MIK Ibanez, and I still love it for sentimental reasons, but I can't bear to play it now that I've moved on to MIJ's.

It's good that you're happy with your RG120, but ask yourself a couple questions:
- How long are those stamped pot-metal knife edges going to stay sharp with that kind of abuse?
- Even if your guitar is a shining star of MIK quality, isn't consistence just as important? I have never been disappointed with an MIJ Ibanez, but with the MIK's you have to get lucky.

Re: Quality of Ibanez, Flame on..

I had a Floral Jem that was a piece of crap sold it, I have had my fair share of 550s that didt play well or needed shimming, etc etc.

Japan doesnt equal perfection every single time either so that argument is pointless. There are plenty of duds out there in the Japan form.

I have seen more then a dozen threads on here with broken stud posts on Japan guitars so the stamped metal edges is also pointless, plus I never go that insane on a trem.

People equate high end or Japan to this pedestal that its the end all be all and could be missing a crap ton of nice guitars being close minded. I see it here all to often. Go read the NAMM 2012 thread LOL

Re: Quality of Ibanez, Flame on..

I've played a pretty wide variety Ibanez's... by that I mean I have played really about a dozen of the "golden age" J-customs, and jems and stuff. And I own a nice mahogany MIJ-RG. I must say though, one of my other Ibanez's is a RX60, which on many days, I could prefer to my RG. To that end, the majority of my songs with all of the "good tone" (losing, for example) complements were recorded with the RX60. You can look at the specs, but most people here would probably get sick if they read them, I'm sure they have powersound pickups or something.

Re: Quality of Ibanez, Flame on..

No reason to flame!! I've got a low budget RG 350 myself and it plays perfectly!!!!
Okay, I wasn't satisfied with the Edge III for several reasons (incl. going steadily out of tune), but overall it's a fantastic guitar!! I've put in some effort in the looks and upgrading the trem, but it was a great guitar even when the Edge III was still installed!

I agree with one of my previous posters: it's a general disappointment about cheaper guitars, because in 28 years I've tested lots of them, even owned some.
Usually the electrics are not durable, just as the trems aren't!
Most of the times the PUs suck (but that's a matter of personal taste).
I personally love the sound of my "cheap" INF PUs in my 350 MYE.

Ibanez generally is very good in low budget guitars.

Take a look at Fender!! I only touch Strats up to the 90s from USA or Japan, because everything else really sucks big time (including USA Highway 1 series) due to low quality wood and low quality PUs.

I would NEVER touch a Squier by Fender.

It's just because I have played so many Strats in my life, that I dare to say I'm a stratoholic and maybe even a specialist in some way.

You know, at a certain point you reach a state, where your expectations grow with your playing experience.

Who knows, you might be perfectly satisfied with your guitar now, but in 20 years you might not wanna touch it again.

I must agree, that some people are just show offs who want to show, how much money they have to be able to afford 5000k guitars, but heck, it's so easy: don't listen to others as long as you are perfectly satisfied with what you have. Who cares what others say?????????????????

Re: Quality of Ibanez, Flame on..

This isn't really the most applicable thing, but I also realize that my RG has stuff go wrong soooo often compared to my other guitars.. lol!
