Question for 2010+ jem owners

I just got a 2011 77vbk and compared to my 2005 77vwh the knobs don't sit completely flush with the pickguard like my white one did. Is this normal on newer jems? I took it to guitar center and they said it is normal and thats just how the pot is. But I thought why does a 2k+ guitar not have pots that make the knobs sit flush with the pick guard? Anyways here are some pics of what I am talking about.

There is maybe 2mm of space between the pickguard and the bottom of the knob. You have to look directly level with the guitar to notice it.

Re: Question for 2010+ jem owners

Take the pickguard off and shim the pot on the underside. This will draw down the height of the pot and get you where you want to go.

Means that some either didn't have a solution or didn't want to become troll bait.

The knob will scratch the mirror guard. If you don't mind, then shim it until it does.

I was assuming 99% of those on this area of the forum have a jem. None of them have something similar? It would make sense what the person just said that the knob is like that now to make sure it doesn't scratch the mirror pickguard but I just want to be sure. I don't mind it if it is normal.

Re: Question for 2010+ jem owners

You did post this in the wrong section, my 7v had the knobs pretty much flush I cant check as it's been stripped down before I change the guard and pickups but I don't remember there being a noticeable gap.

Rich did answer your question fairly well, it seems a more likely explanation Ibanez don't want new guitars getting scratched up too easily especially mirror guards which can be prone to damage..

You can see the entire nut........... either the knob isn't seated all the way down or Ibanez used the wrong pots on this guitar. Fear of "scratching the guard" is a lame excuse by Fujigen if that's what they're saying.

Re: Question for 2010+ jem owners

It's not like I bothered asking, nobody in the US would have an answer. I just looked at pictures of 5 used ones I've had and they're all like that. Whatever the reason, that's the way they are. I'm surprised the OP hasn't made complaints about what the real problem with those guitars is, and that's where the top is cut short of the bindings in many areas.

I get it.... and why would you. There are bigger fish to fry...........

Never heard that about the tops/binding before............ Killer QC again....

Maybe we'll hear about how crappy it is that Ibanez make the Premiums look better than the Jem's too??

Re: Question for 2010+ jem owners

All those extra custom JEM options are why they cost so much. It can't be easy getting a perfect gap that like that.

Wow ... those gaps do look really bad ... How many (in % of all vbk) did you have to reject because of those gaps ?

Re: Question for 2010+ jem owners

It's been many years but IIRC there was some kind of problem with more than half of them. There's a good reason it lasted 2 years, HUSA had 50 of them stacked up waiting to be rebodied, decided to kill the model and blow them out as blems instead.
