Question question about this maple neck

Hi,

sorry, here's my guitar-OCD at it again, so bear with me:
I got this guitar with a maple neck and it has these dot-like spots in the grain that looks like figuration to me.
My question to the experts: is this birds-eye figuration in a very slight form or is this something else?
These spots are all over the outer flanks of this 5-piece neck. Does this kind of figuration indicate a lesser quality wood? Would this wood be less stable?

here's the pics:

and

thanks,
Lars

Re: question about this maple neck

Dude, you're crazy and I think painted necks are more your thing.

oh, and it seems this was already covered in a topic of yours a few years back. http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f18/qu...ck-126223.html just play the damn thing and stop staring at the wood grain under a microscope! haha

the pics of that old thread are not up anymore, but it was a very different kind of grain (also a different price tag on the guitar)

but thanks for your input anyway

Re: question about this maple neck

Looks to me as a birds-eye figuration, but it`s difficult to say, if there are only pics.
Itīs sure birdeye, if there are the typical light reflections if you move the guitar.

Plug in - turn up volume - play loud - enjoy!

Put OCD to bed.

Thanks, guys!

Yeah, you are right, I guess I worry too much. These little spots actually look nice.

Re: question about this maple neck

One of the boutique US builders (I'm pretty sure it's either Carvin or Suhr) offers shorter warranty period on figured maple necks because they believe them to be generally less stiff... BUT that neck of yours is a made from a multi-piece laminate that'll almost certainly never warp, and I can't recall in my 3 years on this site ever seeing anyone that had a warped multi-piece neck.

wow, that is interesting.
I'm sure, though, the necks you are referring to must be heavily figured.

Re: question about this maple neck

Ernie Ball has been running Birds eye maple for many years on their necks. They seem to be doing just fine with them.

It was only one type of figuring (I can't remember which) and only if the necks were flatsawn too that they gave less warranty. I think it might have been birdseye, it definitely wasn't flame.

It wasn't that the builder I mentioned offered no warranty on said necks, just a lesser warranty period than others had. Although on roasted maple they offered full length warranty on all figures.

Now if only Ibanez would consider using roasted maple...

I can't believe that let that slip through the cracks. I would send that back immediately.
