Question about Satch's Pickup Selector Setup

Disclaimer: I'm a strat guy and know a good amount about single coils (use Area's in my gigging guitars) and have an original 1966 Strat so I know what they should sound like generally speaking.

So I'm looking at doing a pickup swap in a Ibanez Prestige I just got (2 humbucker setup with NO middle single coil). I am thinking about setting it up like Satch's as far as the coil tapping (details here: http://www.ibanez.com/ElectricGuitars/model-JS1200). Do the Fred and PAF-Joe sound good tapped as far as getting some descent single coil sounds. They don't have to be perfect, but I just don't want that thin crappy sound that the Jems have as far as "single coil" sounds go.

I'd love to hear some feedback from players of the JS models and/or anyone who has experience with Satch's coil tapping setup. Thanks!

Re: Question about Satch's Pickup Selector Setup

A coiled tapped humbucker will never really sound like a singlecoil (even if it is a single coil).
The less hot humbucker it is, and the more open EQ it has, the close you get.

Anyway, I think most people looking for a decent singlecoil type sound out of a humbucker in medium output range (like the ones you are looking for) will be happy with the result.
Someone looking for a traditional singlecoil sound will not be happy.

Also consider having the humbuckers in parallel with them selfs instead, I personally prefer that.

The sound of the two humbucker coilsplited and then together in parallel (middle on the pickup selector) are amazingly useful, if you ask me.

Re: Question about Satch's Pickup Selector Setup

Thanks for the feedback Magnus. It's very comforting knowing that I should be ok with the results. I decided to go with a setup like this: http://www.dimarzio.com/media/diagrams/E.pdf. I feel that'll give me what I want out of the straight humbucker options and give me a flavor of single coils that will be usable.

Cool, thats the sort of setup I use too (I wire it like that in guitars with a middel pickup too, just dont wire the middle one up).
But I wire it a bit different to the one you linked too, but close.
Like this
1. Bridge pickup in series.
2. Inside coils from both pickups in parallel.
3. Inside coils from both pickups in series.
4. Neck pickup in parallel
5. Neck pickup in series.

Good luck!

Re: Question about Satch's Pickup Selector Setup

I ended up getting it all wired last night. Have a grounding issue, but I didn't have time to figure it out. Overall I'm happy with the results.
