A question of NECKS

So i just acquired an RG2620 and i really love it, especially the way the strings sit on the neck, but, i find the wizard neck to be too 'big' and i lose alot of reach and i'm getting some palm pain so i'm thinking of using this as a guitar for C tuning. I also have a PGM301 with a neck based on the wizard ii but 2mm thicker... and that neck is perfect, it even feels a little narrower (even though it has a 43mm nut) and is more rounder on the back. i've owened a Jem7vwh in the past but had to sell it for the same reason i dont like the 2620.

So my question... I'm thinking about picking up a JPM4 and was wondering if anyone had had experience with it and a pgm301 or/and 2620, i would assume it would be a bit narrower (42mm) and a bit rounder ala the wizard ii/pgm neck... but is it still AS wide as a wizard in other players hands but with more meat on the back?

Thanks guys oh yeah... long time reader first time poster... HI

Re: A question of NECKS

which wizard neck is it. i have a wizard 2 neck. and at first i thought the same thing but then i fell in love with it after i realize what the real issue was. it was not any wider then any other fret board if anything the way it gets thinner the closer to the head stock made it even easier for me to play then most when i got used to it. what i realized was my issue was that it was so flat that it rested in my palm differently then the rouder ones. which would easily touch my whole palm. i learned when i trained my hand to be on an angle so my palm would fully touch this fret board. at first it was weird fealling but i can play for hours now and not a single amount of pain any more.

Re: A question of NECKS

Yeah the RG2620 has a Wizard... not a wizard ii... i think the JPM neck may be a little narrower tough... when i put the pgm301 neck against the wizard neck (physically) there was a visible difference of the two... the wizard had a good mm atleast on each side...

Re: A question of NECKS

I remember reading somewhere on here that newer wizard prestiges are in fact a mm thicker on each side. According to the 09 US catalog, the wizard 2 is 56mm at the last fret and the wizard prestige is 58mm at the last fret, but it lists the current PGM prestige as 58mm as well. Is your PGM an older model with the thinner neck?

EDIT: Yeah, checked the catalogs online and the older PGM301 necks were indeed 56mm.

Re: A question of NECKS

woah... all this time 2mm of difference may have been the reason i dont like "newer" Ibs and has been the reason for me buying and selling multiple jems and rg's in the last 4 years trying to find one with an older neck profile *slaps head*...

note to self, buy only guitars that are 56mm at last fret... JPM!!!

BTW which catalogue? do you have a link handy?

Re: A question of NECKS

Interesting. I personally find the Original 87 wizard necks to be the most desirable. A close second would be the Jem neck, and finally the PGM neck profile.

On the US catalog site, if you click on the picture of Steve Vai on the 87 jem catalog, it takes you to the link you posted.
