Questions about a RX guitar

My friend is looking to sell a Ibanez RX Series guitar. I'm looking to buy. SO I have a few questions.

1) How does it play?
2) Is it a good guitar for a newbie?
3) How much does it usually go for?

And last but not least.

My friend wants to sell the guitar and amp for under 300. Good deal??

What year is this RX model? Model number? The only ones I can think of off the top of my head were the Korean made 22 fret versions of the RT series made in '93. A picture would help with an accurate price analysis.

1) totally subjective, depends on the setup and your own preferences. Almost any guitar can play decently if set up properly.
2) Probably, especally if it's a solid body, and not some cheap laminate (plywood) body. IMHO, vintage style trems are the best for beginners, to allow for tuning changes necessary for learning songs.
3) Hard to tell without seeing it. You can pickup used RG5xxs for around $250, so go from there...

My 95 catalogue shows the RX40.

Unfortunately it appears to be the lowest in their entire catalogue that year. It's listed as having a plywood body.

Personally I'd stay away from this deal unless the amp in question is worth about $250 of the $300 he's asking for the deal.

my dud RX40 is now one of my fav...

anyway, the guitar together with the RG170 went from plywood (don't buy plywoods, they are better for kitchen cabinets ) in '95 as mentioned, to resoncast in around '98-'99, that's when i bought mine. the current body material is agathis which is a much preferred tone wood. it's a mahagony relative & it gives off that mid-warmth + sustain characteristic, but it's not spectacular. the current 2002 model also sports a much improved trem unit, with bridge saddle screws that don't protrude to jab your picking palm.

oh, andy timmons did influence me somewhat to buy this one. he's now subliminally telling me to check out the SA...

I'm afraid the guitar didn't cost much more when it was new!
I've got a RX750 (only made in 94), that was really the top of the RX range, with mahogany body, v7/s1/v8 pickups and it still looks very nice
Anyway I bought it for like 350 dollars when it was 2 years old, so I hope for your sake that the amp is something!
To start with it might not be a bad deal....
