Radius 540R Custom Made - I got questions if you got answers

I posted this at the end of an earlier post and then decided that its off topic from that post and needs its own thread. Hope thats ok with the moderaters, my appologies. - Chadwick

Ok, we are all talking about the Radius here, so..... i'll add this.
I have a jewel red radius, don't know what year. Think it may be a 91 though. (serial # starts with 91)
I bought my guitar years and years ago to replace an old 73 les paul deluxe i sold to a friend. It was used then but i instantly fell in love with the neck. droool..... Anyways. Too the point!! > My radius has the "Custom Made" inlay in the neck. Its is the only one i have ever ever saw like this on a radius. So... I have worn this guitar out. I want to replace this guitar with another.
1: What is the deal with the "custom made" inlay? What does it tell me about the guitar?
2: Is this guitar rare? (is it worth me sinking dollars into to restore)
3: I am looking for another one just like it. "custom made" and all. Really, where can i find one? Never saw one on ebay. (been looking too, for months)
4: What should i expect to pay for one like mine. 540R "custom made" H H pickup configuration.

thats that.
thanks all,
Chadwick

Radius 540R Custom Made

In the late 80's & early 90's, most Japanese Ibanez guitars said "custom made". *Doesn't really mean anything. *But if the serial number is "F91...", it's an 89, not a 91.

It's not really RARE, but the H-H turn up far less often than the H-S-S version. *I had a jewel blue H-H and loved it, but I prefer the H-S-S. *I think it's an Ultra neck (it is if it has dot inlays). *There was a 540RLTD version with a wizard neck, but I think that only came with sharktooth inlays & H-S-H pups.

Hard to say what you'd pay. *I don't think it's "worth" more than a H-S-S, so you might get one for the same $300-400. *But since they ARE harder to find, you might have to bid against another rabid fan, driving up the price.

Have you considered just having yours refretted? *Or replacing the neck? *Or buying a H-S-S version and using the parts to fix yours up?

Radius 540R Custom Made

Thanks for the reply,
The neck has developed pitting from finger wear and the frets are about trashed. I have a JS1000 and a very fine jem, and i still find myself gravitating back to the Radius when I'm shedding some real hard stuff. Thanks for the info.
As for replacement necks - It is an Ultra neck. In my opinion the perfect cross between the JS neck and the Jem neck. I've played others, but they don't seem the same. Must be the wear on mine making it feel different to me. If i can find one cheap on ebay i will try to buy it, but may find myself getting happy with the sand paper once i get it. hehe.

If you're really happy with the guitar and it's working fine other than the fret and fretboard wear, there's no reason to toss the guitar. People play guitars for decades! There are plenty of options to make it more playable again, and prolong its life.

Take your guitar to a good luthier for an assessment. If the frets just have some grooves in them due to hard playing, you may be able to get away with just a re-crown. If they're seriously worn and there isn't enough fret left to do just a re-crown, then you can get a re-fret done.

If the fretboard is seriously grooved or pitted, some minor sanding or planing can be done to smooth it out once the frets are off, but i think it adds character to a "player" guitar. With new tall frets on it, you may not even feel the grooves, so i'd leave sanding or planing the fretboard as a last resort, since it will thin the overall profile of the neck and might affect the feel you like so much.

A quality refret will be cheaper and easier to do than finding another 540R HH, believe me.

A luthier might be able to fill the grooves, although it would feel different than the wood. *Depends on whether feel or look is more important.

I've had a JS1000 and nice Sabre and kept coming back to the Radius, too...

In 1990 Ibanez decided to start putting plaques on most of the fretboards. It's unclear to me if the whole world got these plaques or if it was just the US, and if it was, just on these US finished guitars. Still some mystery there. Or even if guitars finished in the US were distributed globally. Wheatever the reason, they couldn't stop soon enough for me.
