A real RG550?

I found an offer of a RG550. The seller claims it is an all original RG550 from 1987. As far as I know those RG's had matching headstocks and only the black model had a rosewood fretboard. This guitar however is DY with a rosewood fretboard and black headstock. Is this the real deal or not?

Re: A real RG550?

All I can tell you is that not all of them came with matching headstocks. I seen a few Road flare reds that came with black headstocks.

I seen a guitar like this one on **** before some years back and the neck heel says 550r on it instead of m for maple.

The only thing that got me questioning is the pickups. They look like they say ibz v1 on them. From my understanding that did not show up until the later releases. The originals did not have the writing at first and I know that the early 90's had ibz written on them.

The Volume knob placement is correct. They originals had the volume knob close to the pickup and they were moved farther down in the later releases.

Either way that's a nice axe and if the price if fair go for it.

Re: A real RG550?

The serial number and stamp on the base of the neck heel should help verify whether it's real, but from what I can tell, it is. That's the second DY I'm seeing with a rosewood fingerboard and black headstock.

Here's my '87 RG550 with a black headstock and rosewood:

Re: A real RG550?

I got some additional shots from the seller and checked the serial number. I'm positive it is a real Ibby. It has very little fretwear and only some dings on the lower edge of the body.
As far as I could tell the rest was almost flawless...

I'm picking it up next saturday!

Re: A real RG550?

I bought it last week. It's indeed a real RG550.
It plays like a dream, the only thing I dislike is the fact that the previous owner was a heavy smoker. The smell of the guitar is not just tobacco, but has a nasty bar-room smell which reminds me of an old student-society drink hall. Also the guitar is discoloured a bit due to the nicotine.
Is there a way to get the smell away and restore the original colour?
