recommend a bass

Hi. Am going to buy a new Bass. Only being used for recording at home.
I read somewhere the Squier Basses are a great deal, and i do like the Ibanez Soundgear series but am open to everything. Whats the best bang for the buck on basses ?

Like to keep it under a K. Preferred range 6-700

Thanks

Re: recommend a bass

Try the basses made by Dean, particularly the Edge Q5. Being a 5 string makes it more versatile, it has some EXCELLENT tone as standard (I DI'd one into a track and got nothing but praise for the bass tone), and, the crux for me, its a 35" scale bass, which means it has a much more taught, piano-like tone to it, and none of that annoying flubbiness in the low B.

Its even a nice bass for my admittedly limited slap technique. The only reason I wouldn't buy one would be if you were adamantly against getting a 5 string.

Re: recommend a bass

try and find a late 80's early 90's MIJ Soundgear. You'll probably pay no more than what you would for a new Korean/Chinese SDGR and those earlier ones are beautiful, especially the active IBZ/USA Dimarzio pickup models. Gorgeous necks, especially the 5 string models which are the most comfortable 5 string neck I've ever played. Perfect string spacing and they cover all, no pun tended, bases

Re: recommend a bass

I bought a Cort Curbow 4 string in 2000 and have never bought another bass since. In fact, there are only two more basses I want to own in my life ... a five string version and a fretless 4-string version of the very same guitar - ha!

This thing is incredible. Bartolini pickups, active EQ, "slap depth" control , and an infinitely accessible neck. A little weird balance when sitting and playing, but pretty lightweight and, honestly, just an incredible sounding bass. Highly recommended, and about $400 so it's right in your price range!

Re: recommend a bass

MiM fenders are always a good idea.

I might also recommend an epi for that price, but they're fugly.
