Recommend a guitar for METAL?!

So, I recently bought a dual rectifier and I absolutely love it. Now I want a guitar that sounds absolutely amazing to go with it. (The dual rec really highlights the inadequacies of my current main guitar) I'll be playing balls out metal on it.

I've settled on a list of features I want.

Set neck
Jumbo frets (22)
Active pickups
24.75 scale
Shred-tastic neck
Fixed bridge

I've pretty much narrowed it down to an ESP Eclipse I CTM, but getting one in the U.S. can be pretty pricey. I know theres a bunch of other manufacturers out there.

Does anyone have a suggestion that I might not have considered?

Re: Recommend a guitar for METAL?!

Get a Destroyer or Iceman and dump some hot pups in it: Crunchlab/Liquifire combo, X2N, or even some EMGs. You'd be surprised how chuncky those guitars sound. I recently snagged a Destroyer DT-200 from a brother Jemsiter and love it better than I thought I would. It was going to just be a collection showpiece between my RGs, Jem, and Iceman but that mahogany body makes the stock pups sound so thick that I haven't changed them out yet.

Re: Recommend a guitar for METAL?!

You can probably find a good used Gibson Explorer and throw in some EMG's. I have one and it has to be the heaviest sounding guitars out of everything I have owned including my Jacksons & ESP's.

I'm sure that big slab of mahogany w/ the ebony board has something to do with it, but there is no doubt the EMG's add that much more to the sound. Mine has the 81/60 combo which I like better then the typical 81/85. I think the neck pickup, especially clean sounds better than the 85...IMO

Re: Recommend a guitar for METAL?!

Gotta ask dude, why do you want a short scale neck for playing metal? Unless "iron maiden" is metal to you, it seems like it would be kind of a poor choice. Just my 2 cents, sorry

Edwards builds a cheaper alternative of the Eclipse. Its a subsidiary of ESP quality is great

Why would it be a poor choice? Will Adler from lamb of god plays a 24.75 scale and James Hetfield plays one too.

Re: Recommend a guitar for METAL?!

an .011 gauge string at Eb is 19.6# tension at 25.5" scale and at Eb an .011 gauge string is 16.45# tension at 24.75" scale.

down tuning, for "metal" these days is down to C. If you use a short scale length, you will have floppy strings if you are down that far. Which is exactly why I asked what his "reference to metal" was. Metallica isnt in drop C tuning.

Why dont you guys ask questions before jumping to conclusions.

Unless op wants to use 13 gauge strings, a longer scale may be better for "metal".... Again. Thats why Im asking.

edit: "poor choice" was a poor choice of words I am merely suggesting other guitars are more suited for drop tuning. Hell, you can drop tune a gibson to C, but it sounds muddy, at least to me.

Isn't "Why would it be a poor choice?" a question?

Re: Recommend a guitar for METAL?!

Ok lets clear the air so we can get back to the topic.

The OP never said he was going to play detuned to C, D, or Z or whatever.
If he is going to play in a very detuned tuning then yes a longer scale guitar makes sense.

However, all metal is not played at crazy tunings. In fact most metal is not. So a short scale guitar would be fine for playing a lot of metal.

Iron Maiden is considered by many to be metal.

So lets stop bickering and go play some metal.

And my personal choice would be to play Pantera on a Hello Kitty Pink Guitar.
