Recommend me a string gauge?

Just got my first 26.5 scale 7 string ibby. Always been a 25.5 player.

Been a 9-42 user, have occasionally tried different gauges but always found that 9-42 suits me best.

What gauge would feel the same on my new 26.5? Im struggling to find a set that all match up using the string tension chart thingy.

Am i going to have to make a custom set?

Do you downtune? If you do even with a longer scale you need at least .11's.

Don't bother with that tension chart. Its kind of a myth that it really helps. The fact is, it'll make more difference to your tone if you have too much magnetic mass over the pickup, than if the string is a smidgens too loose.

Essentially, to make a string that has the right tension, you end up with some strings being way more magnetic than others, and that means that string dominates your overall sound.

Just try some sets and see what you like. Don't futz around with custom singles. I did that and just ended up going back to normal gauges.

Are you in standard tuning? Well you're going to have more tension, no doubt about it. Any thinner than .09's and they'll break. So if you like .09's, then I'd get a set of those with a .58 or .60 for the lowest string.

With 9s, 58-60 is the range I'd look in, if you want something pretty comparable.

Of course, that depends partly on what brand you're using - I play Elixir 10s, and they don't offer anything between 56 (too light) and 68 (prtty heavy). I just use the 68s as I'd rather have something with some meat to it, but if they made a 62-64 or so I'd be a happy camper.

That's why I use D'Addario. They have every gauge that you need. And you can order them separately. For my 7 strings, I get a .10 - ,48 set and get a single .70 for the lowest (25.5" scale in Drop A).

Fair enough... Except I'm lucky to get a week out of a set of D'Addarios, while Elixirs still sound fine after six or eight months.

Re: Recommend me a string gauge?

I'm assuming you bought an RGD? If you tune it to factory tuning you may just want to try the string gauges you have been using. I'm not positive on this but the lower factory tuning may off set the longer scale making the string tension feel more or less the same.
