Reissue Rg550 VS origionals

I'm interested in what people have to say comparing reissue ibanez to the originals, especially the rg550, but also others. The newer models are different in that the neck is built with more pieces to prevent warpage and cracks that the origionals are known for... so that is an obvious improvement. What I am wondering is what else is there? Tonewise, which ones sound better? Would a late 80s Fujijen rg550 sound better than a reissue one? BTW are the reissues made in Fujijen? I would love to hear from someone who has both old and new/reissue guitars.

The few reissues I played were killer. Really nice guitars. I guess the only difference was they felt "new" vs. "old".

I think the necks in the reissues are super strong because of being 5 piece and I think they have reinforcements in them.

Re: Reissue Rg550 VS origionals

I was so close to being able to give you an opinion on this, but since the guy at the music store didn't know that he had to order my RFR RG550 20th at the muziek messa in Germany, I have an 87 RG550 only...but I can think of a good reason why these guitars get these cracks in the neck pocket...and the new ones are likely to also..if you ever hold your guitar next to the headstock and raise your guitar level, this puts a lot of stress at the neck joint, and wood being wood, gives(very slightly) enough to crack the paint, which is not threatening the wood are the playability at all, just cosmetic...

Re: Reissue Rg550 VS origionals

I just bought what I was told was a 20th DY 550 sight unseen. However, when the case showed up it was a dead mint '93 original.

The store felt bad, so they offered it to me cheap.

Here she is after all new electronics, and already on the way to her new owner.

The reissue doesn't have AANJ.

Re: Reissue Rg550 VS origionals

I to have both -- replaced the neck on my original back in the middle 90s.
I think the neck finish on my 20th Ann. model is better -- as far as tone -- I think my old one is a tad bit more open sounding -- the 20th Ann. guitar is a touch darker sounding with a tighter reponse.
FYI - both of mine have ROSEWOOD boards -- Me and Maple dont get along....

Re: Reissue Rg550 VS origionals

Never seen or touched one of the "Reissues", but I did own a '87 RG550DY and a '91 RG550 w/a Faux Stone Finish and Replacement NOS CAR Red HS Neck on it that I picked up from Drum City Guitarland.

Eventually sold both of them and now, years later, wish I had kept them both. GREAT GUITARS...as everyone here knows. BEST...NECKS...EVER!!!
