Replacing my RG7420

Bought a seven-string RG last year. It has served me well, and became a wonderful instrument after replacing the strings with 011 to 060 and putting a single EMG-707 in the bridge. However, I want to get a new primary guitar and only use this as a backup. My knowledge in guitars is very limited, so I'm asking you for help.

The contestants for becoming my primary axe are:
UV777P: The champ. Unsure about the wood though. The looks are... Odd.
RG8527 DBK: Mahogny! That, and an overall beautiful guitar.
RG1077XL: Longer neck than usual - good. A good guitar, the cheapest of these.
The K7 guitar would probably be perfect for me, but because of the hideous logo in the fretboard... Let's just say that it is out of the question. I'll take it if you throw it at me, but I won't buy it.

My music style is geared at heavy stuff like Pantera, Machine Head, Fear Factory and Meshuggah. Soloing is not really for me, fiddling with artificial harmonics and doing odd things with the Floyd is.

Id get an RG7620 and replace the pickups with paf7's that would make it the same thing as a K7, and u still get a tone knob, a 5 way selector
instead of 3 and no k7 logo.

The 1077 is also great, especially if u tune down, but on a 7 string i dunno why u need a baritone.

And then the almighty universe, the best all around guitar. u can find decently priced used ones. if u dont like the funky looks that much (niether do i) a 97 uv7bk is a good choice, it keeps that flashes down but the sound is still up. u can find one for under 1000 used.

hope this helped u a little

The RG7620 converted to a K7 sounds tempting. I considered the XL neck because I keep thinking to myself that the neck is too short whenever I'm playing on a standard RG neck. Oh, and the tone knob - I wouldn't really miss it in case it disappeared.

Thanks for your opinions!

Actually, the 1077 isn't a baritone; it's a standard-tuned 7-string with an extended scale for better bass clarity and definition. If you're into low, heavy riffing and soloing isn't a factor, then i have a feeling this axe might be PERFECT for you.

And if you did buy a K-7 for one reason or another, I know a few people who had ideas for replacement inlays that would get rid of it for you.

The K7 is more than just a 7620 with PAF-7's... the most significant difference is that the K7 has a mahogany body, whereas the 7620 is basswood. Big difference in tone.

My vote would be for the 1077XL. I think it's one of the classiest RG-style guitars Ibanez has made.

ok, ok ... i might of missed some stuff. wait doesnt extraclairity in bass mean its a baritone? i mean if u go into "korn" tuning wouldnt it sound clearer and keep more tention. im not big on specifics but thats all i thought it was (a baritone i mean) if theres other stuff tell me, i was lookin into gettin a 6 string baritone

Actually, a Baritone mans it's tuned considerably lower than standard tuning. A standard tuned 7-string is B-e, so you're no different... Although, a standard tuned 6-string is B-b, and many times does have a slightly extended scale length, so you could look at the 1077 as a bari 6 with an extra high string... But a baritone string would technically have a low F# as the lowest note.

*evil laugh* a low F#...

Actually, Mushroomhead uses (according to Ibanez) "custom RG-7420s", when in fact, they're closer to a 7620. And he meant standard-tuned baritone 6-string.

In defense of my good friend Drew, he said a 7-string's standard tuning is b - e, which is true, he never said that was the tuning of a 6-string. (This isn't important anyway...)

My guess is that the 1077XL is perfect for you!

I'd never buy a Universe unless I wanted to make money off of it, and that's simply because it has Steve Vai's name on it (and if it doesn't, it's still made under his name and I can never play a guitar made under someone elses name like that...)

Your best bet would be to get ahold of as many 7-strings as you can and play them to see what you like. I know that's the obvious response, but it's true...

I'm personally saving for a 1077XL, cuz I am mainly a rhythm player.

IMO the pickups are icky, the guitar per se isn't. i might grab one if it appeals more the next time i play it at my dealer's (impressive sustain + shorter scale length). this is a difficult choice because the RG7321 is going for $300 off its selling price...
