Replacing a RG570 neck with maple?

I would really like a RG550 cuz I love the maple neck on my strat but it seems like 550s are really hard to come by up here. But there is a 570 (serial# F9750729) for sale on CL for $350 so I was thinking that I could buy the 570 and put a maple neck on it...but after doing some web surfing I can't find anyone who sells maple Ibanez replacement necks...and even if I could find one online how can I be sure it will fit the 570 before I order and pay for it?

Or is this just a bad idea and I need to be patient and hold out for a 550...

Thoughts anyone? Any advice would be appreciated.

You should hold out. By the time you buy it and swap everything around, it will cost more then what your spending now.

The 500 series all use the same necks. Just make sure the body's neck cavity matches the heel style: square heel or AANJ. You can put a 550 on a 570 body with no problems. You can find 550 necks on eBay from time-to-time. They show up in spurts, so just keep your eyes out. Expect to pay from $100.00-200.00 for the neck depending on condition and any included hardware.

Just buy two guitars, take all the best parts and put them on one guitar, then sell the extra one. A 550 with a rosewood neck should sell just fine.

The 570 sounds like a decent deal. I'd just on it and then keep your eyes open for a 550.

ok, cool...the 570 is an AANJ...I know the bolt pattern is different but aren't most RG necks AANJ? ...might be easier to find AANJ...I've been looking around and it looks like some necks have bolt holes for both...is this a red flag? what about Korean necks? any red flags there?

Re: Replacing a RG570 neck with maple?

That just means you need to find an AANJ RG550. They made those in '94 and '97-00.

Of course, they made the original square heel from '87-93, so there are more of those. Of course those 550's would have had a matching headstock, which would make it harder to match that particular color. In most of the later years, RG550's were only available in black, so color match won't be an issue.

I see...black is ok...goes with just about anything...I've seen pics of necks where it looks like there are 5 bolt holes, which I'm assuming is to accommodate either AANJ or square...or is that just an inidcation that someone drilled an extra hole int hat particular neck?

You might be thinking of the USA Customs that were built by Bunker Guitars and sold from 1994-96. I used to have one.

That extra hole with the cover on it is how you accessed the truss rod adjustment on those guitars. They called it the Tension-Free Neck.

I would hold out for a complete 550. 550 maple necks are getting very expensive these days.

In my experience it is generally better to hold out for the right guitar rather than modify/customise to get something that already exists as an off the shelf item.

If no-one makes what you want, then go custom.

Re: Replacing a RG570 neck with maple?

I sort of disagree with that. I mean, if you buy a 570 now for a good price and later want to get something else, you should at least be able to break even on the deal. What's the harm in that?

Re: Replacing a RG570 neck with maple?

You could always buy a new fretboard for your 570 like I did.......... The price for these is VERY reasonable....( I paid $77.00 for this one shipped with the inlays already done)

I agree...... get the best parts from both, make them into one guitar, and sell the extra stuff off........it's a win-win!!!!

Re: Replacing a RG570 neck with maple?

Have you tried any of the vendors linked here? If I get in trouble for this im really sorry--> Ed Roman has a healthy supply of necks, I read the downside though... he prefers you to ship him the guitar in order to ensure "proper fitment". But may not hurt to call him or email him as he may be able head you in the right direction. My rx 240 will be going to him here shortly looking for a neck also with reversed head stock, if its maple yay! if not oh well.

I also love maple necks but they are hard to come by even on some major manufactures guitars. But i hear people dont like the way it feels on their hands.
