Replacing X-series Neck

You guys were super helpful in answering my tremolo questions re my RR-250 project (thanks Rich!) The next step is replacing the neck--it came with an X-series neck, but those are extremely hard to find in good condition, and they are quite pricey. Do I have any other options to fit the body? Would, say, a Wizard neck fit? Or am I limited to the X-series? And if so, can anyone point me in the right direction to find some vintage 80's parts?

Re: Replacing X-series Neck

Is it this type X?

http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/us/1986/p14.jpg

If so you need a 56mm heel plate joint neck preferable from the country your guitar was built [I believe they built some of these in korea] So any of the old 25,5" scale 22 fret necks "should" fit the body.

Re: Replacing X-series Neck

That's the X! Oh no the K-word, huh? I'll try to attach some pictures--the Ibanez wiki page says they were MIJ, but it also says the original Wizard necks are 57mm at the heel, while someone here claims it is 56mm. Anyway to tell if my RR is Korean-made for sure? If not, does that mean that say, a non-AANJ RG neck would work, even if it's not from the 80's?

Re: Replacing X-series Neck

Follow-up--how much is too much for a neck like this? Obviously there are different features at different price points, but assuming I want something nice and playable, and in fair to very good condition-- what does is a good 80's neck worth? There's a very nice PL1770 neck on eBay right now for almost $300 including shipping. '86 is the year of the body, and the Pro-Line specs are basically identical to the X as far as neck, its seems. So it seems like a good bet, but damn that's a lot for a neck. There are also some Viper necks going for around that range, if not more, but the Viper is listed at 57mm at the heel, not 56mm. Is it possible to get away with shaving a hair off the neck, or the neck cavity, or both? Or should I scratch anything that isn't 56mm from the list?

Re: Replacing X-series Neck

Sorry for the spam posts guys, but I've fallen deep down the Ibanez rabbit hole! I'm now realizing that the original RR250 (and, I'm assuming, anything equipped with a Powerocker tremolo?) does not have locking nuts at the head stock--yet I'm noticing that most X-series necks do. So my question is, am I limited to a 25.5", 22 fret, 56mm at heel neck WITHOUT a top lock? Or can I replace the locking nut with a normal one that is extra wide? Or can I simply string the guitar without engaging the locking nut without any adverse side effects? Thanks in advance for the info guys!
