RG 2820 - Pickup combos...

Hi ya all,

I currently have an RG3120 and I am about to buy an RG2820. I wanna get the store to put new pups in her 1st though, soooo what do you suggest?

Air Norton (Neck) + Tone Zone (Bridge)
Air Norton (Neck) + Stevie Special (Bridge)
Air Norton (Neck) + Evolution (Bridge)

My RG3120 has Paf Pro (Neck) + Tone Zone (Bridge) hence wanting something a little different

Thanks

James

I might be being really dense here, but what are the stock pickups, and what's wrong with them?

The stock pickups are standard DiMarzio/Ibanez humbuckers - ie low end 'default' pickups.
They tend to not be as responsive as 'full' DiMarzio's (having said that, there is a version of For The Love of God posted on here recorded on a stock RG2820 that sounds ace!).

Mahogony with quilted (or flamed?) maple top (same as the 3120).

Personally, I'd go with the AN/TZ combo. The sound absolutely delightful in my RGT3120.

For the Maple/Mahogany combo, I'd recommend either the AN/TZ combo, or if you're looking for a little push over the edge, try a FRED/Super 3 combo. That's what I've got in my 3120 now.

I'm not a big fan of the tone zone in the 3120, but that's not me. I ganked mine recently. You might like it but personally I'd go with something else.

i personally like the TZ in mahogony,

but youve already got a 3120 with a tz in the bridge so id suggest going with something different thats why you;re getting a new guitar right? for something new.

Id suggest going for something entirely different, like an Air classic in the neck and a Bluesbucker in the bridge.

or try going for Duncans.

Try going for a sound that will make this guitar entirely different from your 3120

Ah - makes sense. The 2820 isn't in my catalogue, and I'd guessed (incorrectly!) that it'd have "real" DiMarzios.

Hmm..I have the RG2820..and I installed dimarzio Air Norton and Steve Special in them. I've recently posted some clips I did, directly recorded into my PC using the V-amp 2. I really like the Steve Special, esp when I use it with my Dual Recto
Here are some clips, might give you some idea how they will sound:

Oopss hehe thanks for the comments!

Before I installed the pickups, I carefully removed the original foams on the stock pickups. The weird thing is I needed to put in the foam only on the neck pickup (air norton) but I didnt need to put a foam on the bridge pickup. The height in the neck was a bit too low if I didnt slot in the foam pieces but it was just right for the bridge pickup. Not sure why this is so or maybe its a personal preference when it comes to pickup height I guess. I prefer my neck pickup to be slightly closer to the strings and also because the AN is not a very hot pickup so I needed that little bit more output

Hmmm what do u mean about "foam"?
Been a couple of years since i played with pickups, but cant remember seeing any foam on the paf pro/fred that i touched.

My RG2820 was meant to be delivered yesterday - courier didnt even ring the door bell - just put a card through saying we weren't in (which we all were home!) They will try delivering today.
