Smile Rg 470 ... is it any good ??

hi ...im planning on getting a used rg 470(japan made) for SG$350 (US$221). is it a good buy ? i heard that the 470 is a pretty low end model ... how does it compare to other RG models ? the seller didnt post a picture of it , but he describes it as "very good condition with a slight ding on the bottom side of the body" . basically , is it something you would put your money on ?? im planning to test it out this sunday at the seller's house. any comments would be greatly appreciated ... thanks :-)

Re: Rg 470 ... is it any good ??

Well to start, its like the RG570, but has a TRS trem, which inferior to a Edge, and can not be interchange, because of the how they routed the body.

You will still probally want to change the pickups too.

If have some money I would wait for a RG 550 or 570, or go for a newer models. I picked up a great 97' RG570 about 6 months ago, for $300 + shipping with one chip in the body, neck & frets were perfect.

If I were you I'd wait for a cheap 550 or 570 to come along. You can get one for around 100 to 200 more, but it will probably be a little beat up, but a great player. good luck with whatever choice you make.

Agree with bluealien and brothersnowgone. The trs is a crap trem. You can pick up good MIJ Ibanez for very little money.

I think $221US for a made in Japan RG470 is a good deal and a prety nice guitar. I even like the Korean RG470's so I think the MIJ model would be even better.

Re: Rg 470 ... is it any good ??

my mate has a korean RG470 that I just spent along time setting up for him, its a great guitar let down badly by the trem, cant knock those trs trems enough mate, but MIJ should be even better but let down by the same thing.
but overall, $221 is about 110 - for that price I would bite the guys hand off - especially if youre handy with a router and have a spare edge trem around.

ALSO !!!!
I have a MIJ RG450 - bought in 1991'ish brand new.
it has an edge trem, so it may just depend on what year the guitar was manufactured !!
but im no ibanez historian.

basically, what peeps are saying is that the trs trem in all its guises SUCKS !
you would be disappointed

+1 to the "hang on for a 550" brigade !

Re: Rg 470 ... is it any good ??

Thanks for the input guys :-) . is it possible for me to swap the trs with an original floyd rose .. i saw one on sale for like sg$50 (us$30+)? yah ... i've been looking around for good buys but can't seem to get a 550 model here in singapore ...*not within my budget anyway , most of them are like 300+ above my budget* .. and i dont really want to buy from overseas dealers (only when it comes to instruments) .. cuz i'd like to play them before i buy. if i can swap the trs with an original will it make much of a difference (then i'll get it) ??? if not , then i'd probably not buy the instrument . other than the bridge ,is there any thing about the 470 that i should probably know about (good or bad stuff) ? thanks again for the input :-)... i had no idea the trs was bad .. i always thought all locking bridges were the same ...heheh

Yeah. I've read on here before where people have tried this and said that it works. I've heard of inconsistencies in the routing of Korean models, but since this is a Japanese 470 you shouldn't have that problem.

Re: Rg 470 ... is it any good ??

Well, to buy this then put in a OFR, is still a bit of a mistake too, it will still look odd with angle route in the body, and to spend that extra $100, you might was well try to get a RG570 instead.

If this is what you can afford, and when you play it, then get it, but if you can hold hot for a better RG with a EDGE trem, it would be a better way to go.

Good Luck with you adventure...

it's very good, but the trem is awful. As already mentioned, try to get a 550/570 instead.

Re: Rg 470 ... is it any good ??

If you can get an OFR for $50 Singapore then I'd go for it. I've got a Korean RG470 andwith a decent trem it's a fantastic guitar. Getting and MIJ one and putting in something like OFR or a Gotoh FR copy would really be a great setup.

Re: Rg 470 ... is it any good ??

hmm ... after reading through ... i've decided not to get the 470. seems that problem with the trem is really gonna be a pain in the long run . Sg$400+/- is about all i can play around with at the moment , but im not really hard up for a new instrument . so well , i'll ask around in the forum again when i come across another cheap buy . thanks for the comments :-) .. helped me alot.

Which year is the RG470? If it's after 03, it should be an Edge trem...

Re: Rg 470 ... is it any good ??

i dont know which year is it ... i'll ask him for the serial number later today. im not really well versed in ibanez bridges or products , neither is the seller ... so we dont know if it has an edge pro bridge or not . cuz we thought they were all the same ... heheh
