Question RG 550 to 570 conversion questions.

So, I have a fairly old 1997 RG570- edge trem, wizard neck, v7/s1/v8 config. Anyway, I always liked the 550, and lately I have wanted my 570 to look more like that guitar. Sure, I know a 550 usually has a maple fretboard, but I like the rosewood, and what I really want to do it install a pickguard from a 550 on my 570- I mean the two guitars are almost identical specs and dimenstions wise, right? I figure all I need to do is get rid of the pickup rings, and remove the volume/tone knobs (temporarily), and the pickguard will be an exact fit.

Right now the guitar is a pearl black color, with cosmo hardware, and stock electronics. It needs a setup, and rewiring, but these are the mods I want to do:

*Refinish the guitar in gloss white, including headstock (will add black ibanez decal)
*Add black 550 pickguard with white binding
*Replace Pickups with Duncan Jazz and JB- not sure what to do with single coil.
*Replace the tone control with a separate volume for the neck pickup (bridge and middle will use old volume control)
*coil split the bridge pickup.

The guitar is currently not useable because of the need for rewiring and neck setup, but I really miss using it, and would like to completely transform it into something fairly unique. If the pickguard situation is doable, I would be happy, and once the guitar is done, I would be sure to post some pics.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

the modification you mentioned above is possible to do.
But I would say, you'd better keep the 570 as the way it is, and find a nice rosewood 550, RG 550R, it's available from 94-95, you may want to check the **** for that.

I'd agree. Heavily modifying Ibanez guitars is something I've ended up regretting. Twice. I will never ruin another Ibanez.

Re: RG 550 to 570 conversion questions.

I converted my RG570 to that by adding a pickgaurd. The only major mod was having to drill the volume knob hole lower. See pic - but, I just recent converted back to the 570 (I filled in the hole and pickgaurd screwholes). I like the 570 better now.

I converted my 97' RG570 to have a pickguard, and I had no issues with the pickguard & holes to lign up. I routed out the back of the guitar for the sustainer though.

Re: RG 550 to 570 conversion questions.

I have an '89 RG570 so they must have moved the knob lower between then and 1997.

Re: RG 550 to 570 conversion questions.

cool. thanks for the replies and pics. i know i might risk damaging or devaluing the 570, but it seriously needs a makeover anyway, and isn't worth very much money- plus, my "backup" guitar is a Gibson SG Std, so I'll have a nice axe to fall back on if the conversion screws up. I think I'm going to go for it. Later.
