rg 550 mystery.......

All right all of you RG fans i found what i believe to be a awesome shape rg 550 at a pawn shop,,the price was 169.00 usd so i put 20 bucks on it to layaway till i figure out the mystery,,,,, the guitar is either desert yellow or neon,,it has a BLACK head stock, ,with a F00 xxxx serial number(2000 japan) it has the V-S-V pickups,,,and a rosewood fretboard maple back (no bubinga stripe),,,,dot markers,,,trem, now for the 2 mystreys...it has no pick guard from the factory no screw holes ,,i owned 3 different 550's (late 80's early 90's) all had pick guards and maple neck, also the headstocks matched the bodys...so i dont know whats up with that,,,mystery 2 it has A RG 550 STICKER...its very small on the back of the headstock in gold lettering it looks factory,,,but i dont know???i know i can take the neck off and check the stamp but i'd like to know before i buy it?!?!?!Ive searched the web for A picture of a 550 with no picguard and black head stock but couldnt find one......SO.... Is this rare gold i should jump on???????or a combonation of a 550,470,570 mix,,that still may good,,or should i kiss my 20.00 bucks good buy?!?!?! let me know thanks !!!!!!!

Swapped neck, if it has the old style heel the neck is a 1990 not 2000(from 87 to 97 the first number is all that matters).

No such thing as a 550 with no pickguard, so the body isn't the match for that neck. Now, they did make an RG550R with a rosewood board, so the neck is probably really from an RG550(I believe white 550s came with black headstocks), the body could be either a RG570, 560, or 760, 770, or 470 depending on certain things/year.

Any more info? Pickup config? Mounting rings or direct mount? Is the neck heel slanted or straight(a 93 RG470 looks like a 570 except the heel isn't recessed)? etc, etc?

most importantly what is the bridge on it? If it is any sort of edge get it, the bridge alone is work what they are asking.

Most probably refinished RG470 made in 2000 in Japan.
If it's in good condition it is easily worth the $170.
You can always block the TRS trem if it gives you problems or just set it up well and don't abuse it - it'll work great.

or if you are into locking trems, swap the trs out for a Original Floyd Rose. The OFR and Edge are argueably the two best locking trems on the market and the OFR has some things i like better: 1. You don't have to replace the knife edges 2: Collar type arm for a tight fit forever 3: Easiest trem in the world to find parts for. You can find them here: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...base_id/41019/

This seems like a good project guitar. The only thing i would do besides change the bridge is put some pickups in there. I would recommend leaving the single coil and putting in a Tone Zone/Air Norton combo.

Re: rg 550 mystery.......

My USA Custom RG has no pickguard and is copper with the black headstock-

Back plate says embossed USA, and as does the the headstock USA Custom-

however mine is all very clearly marked-

Not sure about the Japan models not coming without the pickguard-

did you end up buying this guitar?
