RG 550 rare, and questions....

I have a 89 RG 550 (*I believe its Atlantic blue) with a reverse headstock rosewood neck.

A friend, stationed at USMC in Iwakuni, had a friend who worked at the Fujigen guitar factory gave him the guitar as a gift for helping him. It came to the US in '02 (ish) and I was given the guitar.

-Did they ever make a production reverse?
-The trem is missing 1 saddle block. Are these standard FR sizes. I can purchase 6 from allparts but want to know if they will fit.
-The 5 way is a bit noisy....after not being played for 20 years will this quite down with use?
-It has the 'cracks' on both sides of the neck heal. How do you know if theses are finish or wood.

Thanks for any and all advice.

Welcome to Jemsite JH!!

Do you have pics of your 550?

I know there was an RGR450LTD, but that's a completely different animal. Never heard of an RGR550R??

You have 4 now... describe it more please.

Pickup config, color of pickguard, trem?

There have been several RGRs released in production... though not sure what was available in 1989.

In 89 they were still square heel so it could be someone just put a left handed neck on it. But yes pics for the best way figure it out.

Re: RG 550 rare, and questions....

'Back in the day' I worked for a guitar company in the engeneering department. It was not uncommon for me to build a guitar, take it home for testing and eventually just give it away.

(*all prototype and test guitars would have to be cut up with a bandsaw, no matter how perfect or condition. This was/is a company policy....many of the people in the engineering department had a serious problem with this and tried to save as many as we could....because it was WRONG to destroy a piece of art).

I would not be surprised if that is what happened in this case. I do know the guitar was never changed after he got it....and it came from Japan as I now have it.

Funny thing about the guitar is that it has its fair share of edge dings (as many square edge guitars do), but almost NO playing wear. The frets look new, little to no finished off the trem, no playing scratches on the pickguard or pickups and no signs of prolonged backside (buckle rash) type wear.

Re: RG 550 rare, and questions....

Well since the ibanez logo is upside down, it would just be a lefty neck on a right hand body. Although very cool as I love the reversed look, It doesn't appear to be anything out of the norm of modified Ibbies.

Its a Left handed neck as the logo would be different in a reverse scenario as Fastmerc stated.

Thats great, good to know.

Do the cracks at the neck look like anything I should be concerned with????

Very cool man. I can totally believe your "employee build" one-off story. This is the first I've ever seen that particular neck stamp. The guitar was either built in, or had the neck replaced in '93. I'm opting for a replacement neck as the neck joint cracks point in that direction.

I'm betting the cracks are fairly serious. I'm sure they're into the body and not just the finish. It should be an easy fix if it hasn't already been done. Do you have pics of the neck pocket too?
