is this RG Counterfeit ??

I found an RG450 and went to check it out. First thing I found weird was it was heavy compared to my rg570.. significantly heavy. also there was no serial number on the back of the headstock and just a sticker that says RG450. The paint job is apparently customized after.. and there was no marks from the pickguard screws (I believe 450's have the pickguard?) (possibly filled before paint job). Neck seemed very similar to my rg570 except for the varnish finish on the back (my RG has a satin finish).

headstock and body looked good.. it's apparently a mid 90s. The bridge is a licensed floyd, and looked good, stayed in tune good, but seemed a bit tight in the body on the sides.

I've attached a pic.

thanks in advance!!

No--that's not a fake! It's the real deal. However, it's not a 450. Looks more like one of the sunburst 570s. The neck may have been swapped at some point, that would account for the 450 decal. This has the Edge, and it's hard to tell from the pic--but I don't see a jackplate.

Re: is this RG Counterfeit ??

hmm the paint job was custom.. and done afterwards by a previous owner. whats telling you it's not a fake.

the RG 450 was just a sticker.. not a stamp like Ibanez uses now a days. When did they start using a stamp ? did they ever just use a sticker ?

also, does the weight of the RGs vary a lot?? cause this one was lbs heavier than my RG570.

thanks a ton!!!

Re: is this RG Counterfeit ??

The older RGs had a decal on the back of the headstock that stated the model number. The fact that it has a real Edge trem installed is one of the factors. Pics of the back of the boday and headstock, plus the input jack would help...

what do you think about the weight? is it common for RG's weight to vary a lot ?

Re: is this RG Counterfeit ??

if you are comparing 2 basswood rgs the weight will be similar. Mahogany is obviously heavier, though I dunno your model or what the wood type is. Its definaly NOT a '50 though, no pickguard. 470/570 is probably more accurate as Alaska said

Counterfeiters are not looking to copy mid-level guitars. No money in it, really. It's JEM's and JCustom's with some JS's thrown in on occasion and in moments of rarity, PGM's.

Re: is this RG Counterfeit ??

Another interesting note is that while it sports an Edge, it's not original to that guitar. Look at the trem recess-it's got angles on the sides, which indicate that this body was routed for a LoTrs trem.

Re: is this RG Counterfeit ??

I'd say it's an RG470 with upgraded trem. I've done the same thing to my RG470, which I was lucky enough to get with a Japanese Wizard neck.
