Unhappy Which RG to keep :|

Hello all,

I'm stuck in a dilemma. Due to financial reasons I need to get rid of all but one of my guitars. I own a

1) Mint RG550 black from '98. I mean Mint!

2) Mint RG520 brown quilt from late 90's. I mean Mint again!

3) RG470 purple installed with Dimarzio's - neck the breed, a ygm and another dimarzio pickup which i've totally forgotten. I bought the guitar second hand and cannot remember the name of that last pickup.

Now I am by no means a pro. I play only as a hobby and am continuing to learn to shred, love playing rock covers and very intrigued by blues (which may mean I will be playing this later on). I bought the 3 guitars within 2 months of eachother as I was getting good deals on all of them and couldn't really refuse. However I need to sell 2 of these guitars but cannot decide which.

The 470 is great because of the dimarzio's already installed, however I am not complaining about the stock pickups in the 550 or the 520 either. Ofcourse the trem in the 470 isn't as good as the other two. The 550 is great because... it's a 550 for crying out loud! And I like the idea of the 520 because of the lack of middle pickup which won't get in the way of my picking - however I find I do tend to use the middle pickup on my 470/550.

I havn't posted pictures because they are not really going to assist you guys in helping decide which to keep - just going off your personal opinions on these babies. I also know that the first response I am going to get is "depends on which one you like the feel of - after all you are the one playing the guitar" but frankly I don't know enough about these guitars or have enough experience to decide what might be better for me later on, what will last longer etc.

So any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Sameer

If you like the Dimarzios, put the 470 pups in the 550 and keep it. If it has a maple neck even better! in any case I'd keep the 550 for versatility, if you only have to have one guitar.

Yeah I was thinking about doing this. Price is another question - how hard would it be for me to do this myself? If I took it to a luthier how much should I expect to pay for this to be done?

Keep the one that makes you tingle. Same advice works on women too or dudes whichever you dig.

Re: Which RG to keep :|

Swap out the Dimarzio in your RG470 and put the humbuckers in the bridge position of both your RG5xx's and stick the middle pickup in your RG550 leaving the neck pickup stock. That way you get two guitars that sound great. Too bad you don't know what the other Dimarzio is on that RG470, but if it's a Paf Pro or something similar, it'll work fine in the bridge position or the neck position.

Personally though, I'd sell both the RG550 and the RG470 along with the single coil dimarzio and put the two humbuckers in the RG520. (Even though I have a middle pickup in most of my guitars, I'm not too fond of it and generally have it screwed right down).

Re: Which RG to keep :|

Consider if you really need a middle pickup. Personally, most of the times, I find it gets in the way of my picking.

That being, I'd keep the RG520.

However, you can always pick the best parts of each guitar!
Put the DiMarzios on the RG520. If the RG550 has a maple neck, switch them!

But, most of all, do as CosmicDebris says: keep *the one*.

Re: Which RG to keep :|

I am leaning towards keeping the 550 and possibly swapping some of the pickups from the 470. Can't go wrong with that beautiful virgin of a maple neck either...

Honestly i find the quilt-top brown on the 520 to be ugly. I wish the front was like the mahogany back, so much sexier.

Re: Which RG to keep :|

Does the 520 have cosmo black hardware? Not that it's a huge deal, but if it does it will wear eventually and the plating will probably bubble. Plus, you said you don't like the finish much.

I have an Edge trem in just regular black from a 1987 RG (I bought it used) and the finish is still holding up fine. A small consideration, but still. A pickup change from the 470 to the 550 sounds like a good idea! Whichever you keep, put the best of the best pickups in it from your others.

Thanks.

But how hard is it going to be to swap the pickups over? Keep in mind i have no soldiering experience. How much will a tech/luthier charge to swap between 2 guitars?
