RG Necks getting thicker? (18mm vs 17mm last year)

I have noticed that on ibanez main website (don't go to U.S. website it doesn't give good information on specs, just pick any other country ) neck dimensions for RG guitars have been changed. It used to be 17mm and 19mm at 1st fret and 12th fret. This year it looks like they are, 18mm and 20mm respectively.

I wanted to buy an RG or RGA but haven't tested any yet. I was happy with the thin Wizard neck and I wonder if Ibanez really added some thickness to it.

Have you noticed this change in neck dimensions? Is it thicker?

imo, I've always felt that the super wizards r too thin, even though I have really small hands & short fingers.

I feel that the 1mm increase in thickness is moving in the right direction. my prestige S wif the 17 - 19mm didin't felt too solid, espacially wif whammy usage, it maybe my imagination but I felt that the neck kinda bend alittle when I go whammy crazy....

I've noticed a difference with the new necks, but I don't think it's the extra thickness as much as it is the width at the last fret changing from 56mm on an original Wizard to 58mm on the new necks. I noticed it when I tried an RGA and PGM301. --Jason

You are right, the width is different too. How did you like the change? I liked the old RG necks but haven't had the chance to try a new RG. Does the playability suffer compared to old necks?

Re: RG Necks getting thicker? (18mm vs 17mm last year)

I just got in one of the 2005 RG1570's in my shop this week and it feels more or less like the '98 RG570 that I've had sitting in the store for a while. The RGA 121 that I got in does *indeed* feel thinner and wider than the wizard necks on both my NOS RG570 and the RG1570 that I just got in. I'm starting to think that they only changed the specs for some models but not all.

I noticed the difference right away on the RGA. I even made a comment to my brother and a friend of mine that went with me about it. I wasn't sure if it was susposed to have a Wizard profile or not. I quickly put it up and grabbed a new PGM301. Same thing again. I knew something was up then. After some searching I saw that the neck specs had been changed then it made sense. Personally, I don't like it. I think a person could get used to it, but I love the original Wizard profile.
Ibanez Japan web site shows the specs for the 05 necks. I compared the RGA, PGM301, and Jem. They're all the same now. Some people probably won't notice a difference, but I do. No 05's for me. --Jason

I decided to setup and test the NOS RG570 and the new RG1570 and I must admit, the Wizard neck profile has changed. It's actually thinner (18mm vs 19mm as it was previously) but also thicker at the same time. I'd take the old 17mm wizard over the current ones though.

Re: RG Necks getting thicker? (18mm vs 17mm last year)

Well...this is really bad, I have waited for 3 years to finally get a fixed bridge prestige wizard in the U.S and just when they are available, the neck profile has changed. I used to like Japan made Wizard I better than Korean made Wizard IIs and back then W1 was 17mm and W2 was 19mm. Now it looks like buying a Japanese made Ibanez just for the thin neck isn't as strong a factor as it used to be, since Korean made models are still 19mm while others got thickened to 18mm.

1mm isn't gonna throw u off balance man, give it a try, maybe u can live wif it.

If u want to know "different" try a RG then a classical guitar! freaking crazy!!

True, I have been playing classical for 25 years they are thick. However an RG321 cost $230 and 19mm and RGA121 cost $850 and 18mm. Anyway, I'll probably end up buying one especially having waited for 3 years for a fixed bridge RG.
