RG1527 - now with added Petrucci DiMarzios

I bought a used 1527 a while back and I was more than happy with it but (like others) I felt that the stock pickups were a bit uninspiring.

It would have been rude not to check out the Petrucci twins, so after much debating about bobbin colours, an order was placed with Jaden Rose and the pickups arrived at the start of this month. Time to get busy with the soldering iron...

My original plan was to go with all cream but, even as a special order, the Crunchlab 7 is only available in black/colour. Zebra it is, then. Matching knobs and switch tip from the Bay and I'm pretty happy with the results :

Ooh, accidental Heavy Metal reflection shot there.

Also took the opportunity to give the body some attention with the finishing polish and it came out all shiny and nice.

Pickup opinions? Well, I haven't seen a bad review of these yet and I'm not about to disagree. They both have excellent definition even on the low B and, even with stoopidly distorted tones, arpeggiated chords ring through clearly without descending into mush. As is usual with quality pickups, that extra knob you never bother with that says Tone on it actually does something useful, so you can really tweak your sound through a wide range without diving for the EQ on your amp or pedals.

One last thing - is it really too much to ask for an international standard for pickup wiring colours?

Re: RG1527 - now with added Petrucci DiMarzios

that's pretty classy... much more so than my 7620/1527 hybrid with black/green Petrucci combo. I have added neon green knobs + tip since then :P

Did ya do any routing on your 1527? I did some minor routing in the pickup cavity (just routed a channel for the lead) so the CL doesn't "angle" when mounted. I thought any colored Zebra's are on a "special order" basis? regardless, these pups simply rock!

Cool, I'd missed your thread before now. Looks good - you need to post some pics with it as it is now.

Reminds me, I forgot to do the stud mod while the guitar was in pieces. Damn.

No, but there's certainly not much space to play with in there. The LF is worse on mine as it's mounted "upside down" so the cable has to run underneath the pickup.

Not sure what's available from stock and what isn't, TBH, I just mailed Jaden and told him what I was after, and he did the rest. I know he had to check with DM on the CL7 as the site lists black/black as the only colour option.

Very classy indeed. Looks much better than a regular 1527 IMO BTW, how are harmonics in these pickups?

Your setup looks great! Nicely done!

How do you like the new pickups? I have some special black pole versions of the Crunch lab and Liquifier pickups that I got and will be going into my 1527 this weekend. Can't wait!

Wonderful!! I love that colour combination. The stock pickups and knobs make that guitar look pretty boring.

One more reason to save for an RG1527!!

I've got AN and Blaze Bridge in my 1527...sounds great. The Blaze is very chunky, but not near as muddy as the stock was...It's very Petrucci-ish, but then I'm sure the D Sonic is also...

I wrote the first review of these pickups *brag brag brag* and i compare them here:
http://www.iheartguitarblog.com/2009...liquifire.html

After I showed the review to Steve Blucher at DiMarzio he said something like, 'That makes 2 out of 2 people who have tried these pickups and like them: You and JP.' *brag brag brag*
