RG1550 vs RG2570 as a project base? Any differences?

As title really, I'm looking at a couple of these bodies as projects and wondered if there are any significant differences between them, i.e. type of wood, which bridge will fit, which neck will fit etc.

Same thing. necks different (inlay).

Expensive as a start for a project, though I guess you're more than an amateur.

No, not massively experienced with projects bit have built up an Epi Dot with new pots, pickups, wiring, bridge, tailpiece and tuners. I also paid to have a new nut fitted. I like to build stuff, and I'll never save up the cost of a Prestige so buying it bit by bit and building it to my own spec seems a good plan.

So are the necks the exact same shape/profile?

The necks are the same shape/profile, etc, yes.

Just get the RG1550 if you are looking for a project base. It's cheaper, but has the same specs where it counts.

If the only differences are electronics and the fretboard inlays, I might. But the bodies I've seen are basically the same price so there's no saving in buying the 1550 from that perspective. Do they both take the same bridge?

Any year of the Prestige model guitars come with good bridges. Edge Pro, until a few years ago when it was replaced with the Edge Zero. Read up on them and decide what sounds best to you, and buy the body that holds that particular bridge.

Re: RG1550 vs RG2570 as a project base? Any differences?

I've now just seen an Ibanez RG4EX1 body available and it's a beautiful colour.....

Would I lose out on anything over the Prestige bodies by using that? I'm going to fit my own choice of pickups etc. anyway. I noticed it takes an Edge III trem though. Don't know much about that.

Which necks do they take and are they made of the same wood as the Prestiges?

Edge III is junk, but if you are happy to pull the Edge III anchors out and install Edge Pro ones (much better quality), the Edge Pro is a direct fit.

Re: RG1550 vs RG2570 as a project base? Any differences?

Would that be a very difficult job and would the replacement fittings be easy to obtain? This body is LOVELY but there is also a silver RG2570 body available.... Hmm....

Not difficult if you have a bench drill. Pull the old anchors out, fill the holes with dowel, redrill to fit the new anchor. Studs and anchors can be bought from your local Ibanez dealer, Ibanez Rules, e-Bay, etc.

Re: RG1550 vs RG2570 as a project base? Any differences?

Don't forget that the RG4 has ring mount pickups instead of the direct mounts in the prestige's. If you want to get rid of them you can fill the 8 screw holes, but they will be noticeable......the dog ear routes are asymmetric and quite ugly on these guitars as well. You should also note that the veneer on the RG4 is extremely thin (1.5mm) and will sand thru before you can remove the color, so a refinish is out. The RG4 also has the WizardII neck that, while I like it a lot, is VERY different from the Wizard prestige necks both in finish AND feel.

The big difference between the 1550 and the 2570 is that the 1550 is front route (requires a pickguard) and the 2570 is rear route. You also NEED to know what year each body is. Both models came with either the Edge-Pro or the Edge-Zero depending on the year they were made. AFAIK, the two trems are NOT interchangeable.

I don't really want to go to those lengths re: the bridge. I think I'll buy the RG2570 body and look into a refinish as I'd prefer a nicer colour scheme than the silver.

Re: RG1550 vs RG2570 as a project base? Any differences?

I've found a nice RG2570 body in silver, so won't need to refinish

Next question, what's the part number of the bridge? I've seen a various number of different bridges listed as Prestige Edge Pro but they have a different BR- number.
