RG1560 or RG550?

Hi all -

I am majorly gassing for a maple board and have the following two options (both used):
RG1560 (jewel blue)-->$650 or 1997 RG550 (black)-->$380.

The RG1560 is newer and in pristine condition whereas the RG550 has the usual scratches etc for a >13 year old guitar.

The pickups usually getted swapped out so i don't consider that to be a determining factor as well as the pickup configuration.

so what do you guys think?

thanks

jeff

Re: RG1560 or RG550?

I don't know if I'm helping you or making the decision harder but:

Pro's for the 1560:
The 1560 is a LOT harder to find..... it seems that I can only find them on the internet at site's I've never heard of.

I think the 1560 has the "Super Wizard HP" neck which is even thinner (slightly) than the 550 original Wizard neck.

The price you found on the 1560 is VERY good... they retail for $999 and the lowest I've found on one $785

The Edge Pro bridge is VERY nice, but you'll want do do the Lo-Pro stud mod on it.

Pro's for the 550:

Original edge bridge!!..... there IS NO BETTER!!
Original Wizard neck profile.... there's a reason we all love it.
Fabulous price for a 550.... they usually go for between $500-600, often more than that.

They both have the same bridge pick-up: The V-8. I like it others change theirs out. the neck and middle pups on the 1560: the S-1, is the same middle pup that's on the 550. its a true single that sounds quite thin in the middle position. I've never heard it in the neck...... usually a required swap.

Personally I'd go for the 1560. You can always find 550's in the future (but probably not for that price)

I'd go 550. I hate to admit this, but even older Ibanez guitars tend to sound better... tjeez,.. And I HATE the vintage vibe!

Thanks for the advice. Turns out the rg1560 is a manufacturer refurbished. Any experience on this, or should i just stay away?

thanks

The refurbs are probably ok...especially if you plan to keep it forever. If you sell it, the resale value will suck because of the stamp on the back of the headstock. But since the price is so low you would probably absorb most of the depreciation.

Re: RG1560 or RG550?

I'm not sure about the 1560 has super wizard HP, i think it has prestige wizard HP, as the rest of the RG15XX series.
The only prestige that has super wizard HP is the higher end RG 3XXX.
the prestige wizard HP is a fat a s s neck, rounder and thicker than original wizard.
I dig the HSS config on the 1560, but considering the neck specs... I'll go with the old trusty 550.

i say 1560 as well. each guitar is on par with quality. the original edge is only a LITTLE better than the edge pro so your not really losing quality there. locking stud mod will make it even better (original edge came stock with those). but overall, you could be one of the few known people with the 1560 or one of the few million people with the 550. thats why i pick the 1560

Re: RG1560 or RG550?

Everyone's missing the most important bit.

do you like the look of a pickguard or not? If it's part of the look you're going for, then the 550, if not, then the 1560.

If you're swapping pickups do you want a neck single coil specifically?

You've got other guitars and this is a GAS purchase, so consider the looks as much as anything else as that's what will make you pickup the guitar as much as the maple board!

I LOVE the look of my white RG560, but sometimes, just sometimes I wish it had a neck humbucker, at that point I put it down and go get something else...

Re: RG1560 or RG550?

Well, pickguard or not seems to not be most important to the OP because he's open to buying both models.

The KEY is in the single coil vs humbucker in the neck position. If you already have a good HSH or HH guitar, and you play some blues, the 1560 would be an excellent choice. Although you could always change the pickguard on the 550 if you wanted HSS.

I really wish Ibanez would make some more 560 and 565 models. I would be all over an RG1565.

Re: RG1560 or RG550?

I know! I don't know why they think EVERYONE here wants HSH. It's just my opinion, but I've always thought HSH looked cluttered. There really aren't many HSH alternatives available right now. The RGxx20 selection has been fairly limited for the past few years and that's really been our only option. The RG1420F was a nice surprise though.

Re: RG1560 or RG550?

Well...I've got one, and it's not THAT bad. I really don't mind it, except that it's not as nice of a jack as the other Japanese models. It doesn't hold the plug as tight.

Cosmetically, it looks like a Les Paul's input jack, and it's no worse than a Strat or an S-series.

Well, you got me there...touche'!! nothing is worse than a strat jack....lol

It still killed me when I saw it though. I was really expecting it to have my beloved barrel jack...... oh well, maybe on the next model???
