RG1570 - Choosing a matching single coil

I've got an RG1570 on the way as well as a Steve's Special bridge and Air Norton neck pickup. I need to choose an appropriate middle pickup to match my other selections. I primarily play metal/rock style music, but would like to create a setup that is as versatile as possible without sacrificing the higher output, "in your face" metal tones. I've been looking at the Chopper and Cruiser as possible selections, but I haven't heard either to make a very well informed decision. Any suggestions or input is appreciated.

Why not wait to see if you like the stock pickups with your gear? I am happy with my V2/S1/V1 pickups in one of my 550's.

Re: RG1570 - Choosing a matching single coil

If you're not die hard about a hum canceling single, I would highly suggest an FS-1. It will match up with those two hums perfectly, and will sound killer in 2-4 positions, as well as the single itself.

I usually throw an FS-1 is all of my middle spots.

If you want hum canceling, I have a Fast Track that I'm pulling out and I'll sell for cheap.

Re: RG1570 - Choosing a matching single coil

I'm thinking about changing the V8/S1/V7 pickups in my new RG1570MRB, but after playing my Jem and playing the RG I can't notice that much of a difference between the Evo's and the V8/S1/V7 pickups. I might just leave them for now.

Exactly. The V stock pickups are great. Alot of the time, pickup changing produces a placebo effect.

Since you'd likely be using the HBs by themselves for the in your face metal, I suggest putting in a true single coil for cleans. I put a blue velvet neck version between my super distortion and paf pro.

Try DiMarzio Blue Velvet for middle pickup. It sounds like Strat.

I'm the same...although I will be putting a Breed in the bridge shortly, just gathering quotes.

As far as the single coil goes, I think the S1 is fine as it is....I just hate the pole pieces as they are destroying my picks (really sharp on the edges!).I have to adjust my picking style now (not a bad thing).....

You can have hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4 if you get a RWRP (reverse wound reverse polarity) single coil. That's how the Jem single coil works in the PGM301.

I just wire it up backwards. But either way it's gonna hum in the middle. But I don't ever really notice the hum anyway. It sounds great to me.

Re: RG1570 - Choosing a matching single coil

Is there a big difference between the stock S1 in the rg1570mrb and say a DiMarzio HS-3?

I think so.

HS-2 and HS-3 are very, very low output, and they don't really match up well with high output humbuckers.

I've tried wiring them up both hum canceling and single and I haven't gotten the greatest results either way, with both HS-2s and HS-3s.

Re: RG1570 - Choosing a matching single coil

So if I change the pickups in my new RG1570MRB should I just leave the S1?
