RG1570 makeover questions

Hello all! First post here as I just got an RG1570 off craigslist about a month ago. I bought it with the intentions to learn how to work on guitars more. Do upgrades , change out parts, repaint etc.

I was wondering what advice you all might have?

Right now my plans are to change out the pickups/wiring/pots with all custom stuff. It will have push/pull pots to coil split and a 3 way toggle to choose inside or outside split coils on the humbuckers.

I also plan to repaint it. Not sure what color right now but am leaning towards a darker red. Possibly satin finish. Maybe add a monkey grip like the JEM while I have it stripped down. Not sure.

Also gonna switch out the tremolo with a nice Floyd Rose.

As far as the neck goes I'm not sure what all I want to do except polish the frets for sure. Any input on how I can make it better?

I plan to take my time and just try to make it as badass as possible for funnsies.

Re: RG1570 makeover questions

Interesting. Pickups will be the best upgrade you can make.
Got anything in mind?

A 1570 should have an Edge, why swap it? Great trems, they are.

Re: RG1570 makeover questions

Besides; putting a regular FR on there will require more work, it's not a 'drop in' replacement.

Re: RG1570 makeover questions

IbanezDaemon - The pickups I'm getting are hand wound by dylanpickups. The bridge will be a blade humbucker which I have in another guitar (it's amazing), the middle will be wound like a strat, and the neck will be an 8ball wound pretty hot.

They will operate just as the stock pickups while the tone knob is "pushed". But when pulled it will split the humbers. The 3-way switch I would add would then allow me to choose from inside or outside split coils.

Meechy - I thought the FR would be just a drop in but after reading your post and some quick research I'm probably wrong. The primary reason I wanted to swap is because this trem has seen better days and it's not wanting to stay in tune. I could just get a replacement Edge Pro though. I read a lot of bad things about the Ibanez licensed FRs, but I guess it just depends on the model.

Re: RG1570 makeover questions

I've also been considering scalloping some of the higher frets. Any opinions on that?

You could do a partial scallop maybe? Scalloping makes bending easier but
requires a lighter touch otherwise you'll fret the note out of pitch. Are you
really gonna pull/bend the lower strings at that position on the board?

Re: RG1570 makeover questions

Oh yeah btw I'm with Meechy on this. No need to swap the trem
really. Does it have the Edge Pro or Edge Zero?? If it's Edge Pro
you can get the locking stud mod from Rich. When that's fitted
it's a real stable system, I'd never swap out an Edge for an OFR.

Re: RG1570 makeover questions

My year/make/model came with the Edge Pro. What's the locking stud mod? The only reason I really want to swap is because it's got a good bit of corrosion going on.

As for the scalloping, I do like to play a few songs that have a lot of bends between 12-20th fret. Maybe just a mild scallop from 15 up?

Re: RG1570 makeover questions

Three way switch on an HSH guitar? I would put in a five way you can coil tap.
IIRC Edge Pro will only accept an Edge Pro. There's a thread on trem replacement somewhere in here to be sure.
What color is the guitar now out of curiosity?

Re: RG1570 makeover questions

The 3-way switch is in addition to the standard 5-way. The 5-way will work as normal, the push/pull will split coils, the 3-way will choose which split coils to use.

Right now it's a mirage red. I hate it.

Corrosion and pitting are part and parcel of metal hardware I'm afraid, it won't
affect how the trem operates, in fact your new bridge will suffer from the same
thing if you intend to play the guitar regular. Agreed on the scalloping thing.
Edge Pro trems did not come with locking studs rendering them more unstable
than their Edge/Lo Pro Counterparts. You can get the locking stud kits from Rich
at Ibanez Rules.

Wow, his site has a lot of good info. I'll definitely look into the locking stud. And thanks for the info on the trem.

Cool. I'm glad that you have found some useful info though I must add that
you seem to be prepared to fire a lot of money modding a guitar when you
could have bought a stock model without the need for all the expensive upgrades.
Just my 2C.

Re: RG1570 makeover questions

Yeah lol but there's no fun in doing that. I like modding stuff in general. Nothing better than making something yourself the way you want it.
