RG1570 or S5470 ?

Hi guys,

I'm planing on purchasing my 1st prestige. I personally own a regular RG and i've been trying around an S570 and i could try a prestige S for a very short time.

Now I think i like the S light body a bit better, but it's not a deal breaker either as i'm already used to play on a RG. ZR is cool but I don't mind edge bridge as long as there is a ZPS.
I know they sound quite different du to different woods/pups... But both seemed quite versatile to me. Maybe the pickups in the prestige S was better, but that can be changed anyway.

The price difference between prestige S5470 and prestige RG1570 is huge however. For guys that could try both is there a significant difference in quality between these 2 ?

Should be no difference in quality if they're both Prestige.

Re: RG1570 or S5470 ?

The prices aren't as far apart in the US. Basically, though, you're paying for just a few more things.

1. The S has a thinner neck that needs titanium rods in it for reinforcement. Thinner doesn't mean better, though. It might be easier to go faster, but it'll be harder to play chords.

2. It'll have higher quality pickups. No need to replace these.

3. Obviously, you're paying for the flame or quilted maple top if it has one.

The RG gives you the Prestige treatment without the flare, it'll just be a good, solid, all-around player. The S gives you a little more if you want to be a shred master as it can make some styles a little harder to play on. (These comments are referring to these exact 2 models, not RG's vs S's in general)

One reason why I prefer an RG is the forearm cutaway. An S has never been as comfortable for me to play, especially standing up. I definitely recommend bringing a strap your next visit.

Re: RG1570 or S5470 ?

Don't forget, you're also paying for the mahogany body in the S.
And probably the ZR-2 trem, the whole ball bearing stuff probably invites a premium.

The S's neck will be thinner, as will the body. So you basically have to choose between a thin mahogany body and maple neck, a flame/quilt top, good pickups and the ZR trem at a high price, or a thick basswood body and (comparatively) thick maple neck, the EZ trem and crap pickups, at a lower price.
Personally, i would go for the S, but to each his own.

Re: RG1570 or S5470 ?

The differences in the neck between these 2 are not what struck me the most and in fact that was something around 1mm and since i don't play on prestige often (for the moment at least) i couldn't really feel which is best, as far as i remember there were both nice compared to what i'm used to

As the RG is much cheaper, i can afford new pups in case the stocks pups are really that bad ^^ I don't use the trem so often, as long as it stays in tune i'll be happy with it. I guess i'll have to test them again really to see if i really prefer the S body.

They both will stay in tune for the most part, but I think the ZR will last longer. Knife Edges wear out over time, but the ZR probably wont, because it uses ball bearings. Now i don't know if THOSE wear out, but i highly doubt they do, and even if they do, I am pretty sure they will take longer to do so.

Re: RG1570 or S5470 ?

Thanks for the input guys, i still have a hard time justifying shelling out twice the price of the RG for an S prestige (despite the better ZR system). I happened to see that the new S970cw (premium) is in the same price range (still a bit more expensive) than the RG1570Z. I've never touched a premium, i don't know if it's be really worth more expensive than a prestige in the long term...

Right now i'm still more intending to buy the RG1570Z and plan to upgrade pickups a bit later.

Re: RG1570 or S5470 ?

The pickups actually aren't as bad as people make it out to be- it's just that at that price range, you expect better. Also, a majority of the people who bash the pickups end up comparing the stock pickups to dimarzios/duncans, and they just cant compete.
Anyway, the RG is a great guitar, i'm sure you'll love it.

Just one thing- avoid black, they are common as hell, and any fingerprints and other stuff on it IMMEDIATELY shows.
Trust me, i know.

I'd go with the 1570. More versatile. And I dislike the ball bearing trems

Congrats, its a great guitar.
What color did you get??
And how is the Edge Zero?? I ask because i hear lots of things about them, and i wonder about how it actually is.

Re: RG1570 or S5470 ?

The only available color still made in europe was black... So that narrowed my color choice ^^ I mean there were other shops with other color but the price were quite a bit more expensive.
The edge zero + zps is a dream compared to the edge 3 i was used to ^^. Nice being able also to set the intonation easily, much easier to tune than edge 3, much more responsive... I've played on some ZR 2 as well, the feel is different, i've always preferred the edge feel over the zr (that's part of the reason i bought this RG over the S).

One of the thing that struck me the most at first is that the guitar weight half less than the regular RG which sets it about on par as regular S weight i'd say.

I'm really happy with it and i don't regret investing in a prestige guitar, it's worth the extra money, really. Perfect setup, just had to adjust 2 strings slightly out of tune
