RG1570 vs RG550 Twentieth anniversary

I was wondering what opinions are between an RG1570 for $549, or an RG550 XX for $599.
I have been looking for an RG570 like the one I had in the 90s.i had pretty much decided on a 1570 because the Frets were in better condition, but now I just found a black RG550 Twentieth anniversary edition, and I am torn.

I've heard pretty mixed reviews on the twenty fifth anniversary RG, and a bunch of them said they were inferior to the twentieth. What I don't know, is how the XX compares to a 1570. Both are in fantastic condition, and both are the right kind of guitar that I am looking for. I don't care about resale value. I'm mostly concerned with the overall quality of the two models.

Re: RG1570 vs RG550 Twentieth anniversary

The twentieths are brilliant. The necks are great, have titanium re-inforcement. I think I needed to adjust the truss rod on the one I owned maybe twice in 5 years. The fret finishing isn't quite as nice as prestige work (rounded fret ends), but there's nothing wrong with the work done. The 550's are also a bit of a limited edition, so it may or may not be more valuable than the 1570 down the track.

For me I'd buy the RG550XX hand's down, no brainer actually. Best for
you to try before you buy though.

Difference - Neck shape, pickups, square heel, & trem.

Re: RG1570 vs RG550 Twentieth anniversary

Well, I ended up going for the 550XX. Just picked it up today. So far, I am pretty dang happy with my choice. It looks great. It didn't have the stock pickups, they had been replaced with Petrucci pickups, which I guess is probably a good thing. The only negative about the guitar is, the hex nut where you tighten the bridge onto the guitar, has been broken. The bridge itself is fine, but if I ever want to remove it or anything, it might be difficult. Have to look to see if I can just pick up a replacement nut/bolt for that part, or if I need to replace the whole bridge.

In any case, I am pretty happy right now. So much LOVE the neck. Now if only I didn't have to sit here at work for the rest of the day. I want to go home right now and plug it in.

I own both and I think you made the right choice on the 20th. It's more like your old RG570 I'm guessing. I had a square heel '91 RG570 and the 20th is close to the same feel.

I'm happy with my choice. The thing is fantastic. Some minor dings, and of course the stud on the trem is broken, but that only costs like $12 to replace. All in all, I couldn't be happier. This is the guitar I have been wanting for so long, and it is finally mine.

One thing I noticed was, the case for the 20th is dang heavy. The guitar itself isn't all that heavy, but lugging it in that case actually gets tiring.

Welcome to Jemsite and happy NGD!

The RG20ths are fantastic guitars, I own one and love the thin neck, the variety of tones, and the overall quality. Enjoy yours, post photos, and keep us updated!

Peace

Mike
