Smile RG2550... looking for advice on aesthetics mods!!

Hey guys, Ive been browsing around here for a little while but this is my first post. I haven't been into the forums scene lately so I hope this in the right place. My name's Mike, been playing about 10 years, self taught, but uh, really just a guy on the internet looking for advice.

So here it is, and bear with me. I picked up an RG2550E for $600 a couple years ago, and I'm getting a bit tired of its looks. I had already replaced the stock pick guard with one custom made by a company a few of you guys on here have used. It fit perfectly, but the problem is that what was supposed to be mirror black, looks more like mirror forest green.

Here's the deal. My volume pot got stuck so I had to remove everything, and basically I decided I'd just like the entire guitar to be galaxy black, as a rear route guitar would be. Being front routed - I know this is impossible.

So here are my questions:
1. Do any of you use a clear pickguard, and if so, how noticeable is it / how much does it still distort the finish of the guitar?

2. If I could find a paint similar in nature to the galaxy black finish, would it be worth painting an existing pickguard to match? My concern is the clear coating process and flaking.

Any other suggestions on how I could try to make this look like one solid color are welcome (Other than telling me I should have gotten the 2570).

Bump... No one has ever painted their own pickguard or used a clear one?

Here's a shot in the dark. You could take a high quality photo of the guitar finish and have a graphic artist make a swatch from that photo and print a vinyl decal for your pickguard.

It might be fairly challenging to get a photo that would work. Perhaps you could find a stock photo or swatch of the galaxy black finish *on a website* and use that.

Good luck

A clear pickguard painted on the reverse with the same paint as the body should give a good effect. You'll still get a mirror type effect from the pickguard, but if you also respray the body with the same paint you'll get the best match possible.

I painted over my RG pickguard with black paint.. didn't use clear or anything over it and it looks really good and never flaked or came off. That was 4-5 years ago??That being said,, my playing stlye, I don't touch the body when picking so even the pickguards I have had for years show little wear. don't be afraid to paint it! if you want it shiny, get a high gloss paint. I used regular ol' Krylon.

For best results get a can of XIM. Its a bonder. It sticks to anything. Prime the pickguard with this then put your desired finish over the primer. It will hold the gloss out well
