RG2XXV quality?

Hi all -

Thinking about pulling the trigger on the RG3XXV from online guitar center, but kind of hestitate as i can't play one. I'm thinking it should have the same build/quality as the RG2XXV. So for those of you who have tried the RG2XXV, what did you think?

thanks

jeff

Re: RG2XXV quality?

I believe i have to wait until 10 posts to post pictures, but I had the chance to play one. I'll describe what sort of issues it had. Around the AANJ bolts on the back, they over sanded and went through the paint there and there are white rings about the bolts. the trem cavity has spots that are missing paint, almost looked like it was scraped off, maybe rough time with trem installation? There were black spots in the paint like the RG1xxv has. It also had a larger grey mark, but I'm not sure if it was like that from the factory or just guitar center handling.

For the money, its basically a RG350 with different aesthetics. On the other hand, most of these are finish flaws, and we've seen they can spray other colors well on other models. If you are fine with what you are seeing from the RG300 and RG400 series, I'd say it would likely be on par with those. One interesting thing is that it has dimarzios stock so maybe it will recieve better QC because its more expensive.

Thanks for the fast response and info! I actually had an ibanez rg450mdx that i sold later because i didn't like the build quality. If the RG3XXV is on par with the RG2XXV (which is on par with RG300, RG400 series), i might pass.....

Re: RG2XXV quality?

As always, try your hardest to find them in store and play. Just because one person had an average experience doesn't mean that all of the guitars have the same sort of flaws. I wouldn't discount a model just because of one or two average examples. I've seen guitars with far greater price tags with the same issues.

Re: RG2XXV quality?

Played one at GC on Saturday. No different than the RG350 to me. Would not waste the money. Made in Japan is the way to go. I would not waste the time to compare it to an older RG5 or RG7 series. They are far better quality.

Did you notice any finish flaws on the one you played? I agree with the RG350 sentiment.

Also OP, if you aren't a stickler for condition you could probably get a RG565 for the price the RG3xxv will be.

RG3XXV's apparently come w real DiMarzios. Love how one dude on the Marshall forums is calling them RG550 and RG565 reissues. Lmao.

Re: RG2XXV quality?

Has anyone noticed that the specs listed for both say the body is ash? Now I'm very intrigued!

Re: RG2XXV quality?

The RG2XXV I played was pink and I didn't plug it in. I didn't notice any paint flaws cuz I was more interested in how the neck felt. The paint on the pink strings was completely gone over the middle pickup though. The guitar just felt inferior to all my MIJ guitars. The fretwork seemed OK. Maybe it was the 400 radius.

Re: RG2XXV quality?

Musician's Freind has a listing, but no image yet. $699

Basically, this answers all the issues I had with the RGR465. I am definitely intrigued.

Re: RG2XXV quality?

I can comment on the quality of my S 25th since it is not a premium/MIJ model.

The paint on mine is quite nice with no black marks. There is some white showing through a little around the input jack and some black on the inside walls of the single pickup cavity but that's it.

My neck was bad. Ibanez offered to pay for the work that was done to it. It needed to be heat pressed along with fret sanding. It's great now but was really buzzy right out of the case!

Bottom line: try and play one before you buy it. Every guitar is different, even of the same models.

Not exactly -- The 465 was basswood and had the Edge III. This one is ash and has the Edge Zero II.
