RG3120 needs refinishing

As the title says, I have a RG3120 that is pretty beat up and I'd like to eventually get it refinished. It's currently TW but if I do ever get around to having it done I'd like to have it made into a VV finish. Question is, how much should I expect to pay for something like this? And....does anyone know a good place to have it done? Thanks...

Most likely around 200 or 300, It really depends on who you go to , color, ect
But you should be bold and try refinishing the guitar yourself

Ah...no, I want it to look good, hahaha. I'd gladly pay $300 for it to look "professional".

Re: RG3120 needs refinishing

I had good luck with GuitarGuru as on the link above. He refinished an ESP MII body for me, as I wanted to change it from purple to black. Did a nice job and communicated really well. With all of the shipping and such, it came to around $400.

$300 is not professional. Thats a rattle can out the back door price. A basic finish will run you about $600 at least. Any less and it "you get what you pay for"

Just man up and live with the dings.

Re: RG3120 needs refinishing

I think the issue you will run in to is the 3120 has natural binding. As in the cap is taped off and left unfinished while the top is stained. This wont be a simple strip and stain for the average refinisher. I had a ding on my 3120F (Dark Amber) and took it to my tech. He had a background in furniture refinishing so this was up is alley. The repair came out great, cant even find the tiny little ding unless you know where it is, shine a super bright light and squint really hard..lol......

Just make sure you do your research. In my opionion as long as the dings are not on the top and sides and just to the back you may be able to look past it. However if it is on the top and sides it would be worth refinishing. These are special pieces of Ibanez history and really good ones are becoming harder to find.

Hell, If you do refinish I would do a unique color all together.........

That's true...hadn't considered that. I'll probably just deal with it. 90% of the paint chips, etc...are on the back. Not really an issue. But there are two very noticeable dings on the front. But, I've lived with them this long, so...

Re: RG3120 needs refinishing

My favorite part of this guitar is the cap, moreso the binding. The way the flame carries over.......I would not want to mess that up...lol

You can def find someone to restore it. The other issue is it would cost the same as buying a really good used one. Right now GC has a 3120DR in really good condition (in the used section online) for $600. Thats much less than the job will be to refinish. If you had the money to invest you could buy that one or some other that comes up and have one for parts or alternate tuning etc.....and have a good show piece as well....

Good to have options....

Re: RG3120 needs refinishing

Oh man, if I had $600 I'd be all over that, but I just bought a mint condition Jackson Soloist for $1300....which I might be selling

Re: RG3120 needs refinishing

I just put the Jackson up on Ebay. Hoping to pick up a used 550 (or something similar). I had one many years ago and I'd like to have a guitar with a maple fretboard now. BUT...if that 3120 is still available...

There is on the GC website. Go to the site, go to all used, then pick guitars in the drop down and in the description put either rg3120, rg 3120, ibanez 3120, ibanez rg3120 etc...do not put your zip code, do a blind search.....they have them normally for anywhere from 500-700....

Re: RG3120 needs refinishing

Yeah, that's the one I was talking about. For $600 I'd grab it in a second. Have to sell the Jackson first, though.

SL2H, Snow White with black hardware. I have it on Ebay for $1350 which is what I paid, but I'll ship for free.

You don't know what you're talking about. $600 is a lot to refinish a sold color body.
