RG3120 or RG1680??? - I need help!!!

Hey. *Im finally going to buy a nice high-end ibanez hopefully in december. *Im trying to choose between the US Rg3120 Prestige or the Japenese RG1680. *I love them both!! I have yet to play the 1680 though and thats my big concern. *I love the the way 3120 plays and sounds but I really like the trans black finish on the 1680 and I also like the single coil in the middle position. *The big problem with the 1680 for me is that according to the ibanez japan site.. it has a j-custom neck. *I have no idea how this neck feels and Im wondering if anyone has played one? *I have read that its a lot thicker than traditional ibanez necks (wizard, wizard 2, etc...) *My guitar at the moment is an RG470 with the wizard 2 neck and I am very comfortable playing on this neck. *I am also very comfortable playing on my friends Jem 7dbk which has a slightly thicker neck. *I guess what I am asking is to anyone that has played a j-custom neck... will I feel fine playing on that neck since I am OK with the wizard2 and jem necks? *Help someone please!! Thanks. *Later.

RG3120 or RG1680???

I would buy the 1680 for the 2-1-2 configuration and colors personally. IMHO you can adapt to any ibanez neck pretty easily.

The J-Custom neck specs are widely varied between wizard, super wizard and ultra. Either way they will feel very comfortable to someone used to a Wizard-II or JEM777 necks. Good luck... glen

RG3120 or RG1680???

I have an 1880 and it has the thickest Ibanez neck I've ever played. The "J-custom" necks are pretty inconsistent... I've had 3 different J-customs and they all feel somewhat different. The 1880, though is the thickest of all. I'd assume that the 1680's neck would be similar.

Ever played an RG2020? That's about what the 1880 neck feels like.

Personally, I really like the thicker neck. Gives you something meaty to hold on to.

Either way, between the 3120 and the 1680, you can't go wrong!

RG3120 or RG1680???

Thanks for the input guys... like i said i have some time to decide cause i probably wont have the cash til like december. *Anyway i did some research on the ibanez site and the ibanez japan site as far as the necks go. *On I the ibanez usa site, the specs for a jem neck say that it is 19mm thick at the first fret and 22mm thick at the 12 fret. *On the ibanez japan site it says the j-custom neck is only 0.5mm thicker at both places on the neck. *Now im saying to myself... if i am comfortable playing a jem, what is anothe 0.5mm added on to it? *It shouldnt feel that much different should it? *Another question for ya... how does a j-custom neck feel compared to some other companies necks.. say fender, jackson, gibson? *Thnaks again. *Oh, and if anyone has either the rg3120 or rg1680 used in good shape... lemme know.. i may be able to get enough cash to buy a used one. *Later.

RG3120 or RG1680???

HI I have several gibsons and fenders and the 1880 that I have has a bigger neck than all of them. The neck is just plain hugh. *That being said I love these necks, I've never felt a ibanez neck as well crafted as the j-custom, It's just so silky and smooth. *I also think that the large neck really helps the tone of the guitar. *

Now as far as the 1680 or 3120, If you really like the sound of the 3120 the pickup difference is rather extreme.
I mean a tone zone and a steves speical couldn't sound much more differant, although I think both sound great.

I wish my 3120 had a H-S-H config! *I don't know what the color options are on the 1680, but the DR 3120 is pretty sweet.

RG3120 or RG1680???

I almost bought a RG1680 when I was in Japan (I ended up buying an RG 1880 which Brent now owns). The neck on these two guitars is much bigger than the wizard necks on the RG3120. In the end, I couldn't get used to the neck and eventually sold the guitar. However, personal tastes vary. You may like it.

One more note... I looked at over a dozen J Customs in Tokyo, and I have seen as many RG3120 Prestiges in stores in the US. On average the RG1x80 J Custom tops and woods are much nicer than some of the plain RG3120's tops I have seen. No surprise here. The Japanese tend to keep their best featured products for their own market.

RG3120 or RG1680???

I've had three of the "Texas Special" RGs (RGPR1, 2, 3), which are not tagged as J-Custom but seem to be closely related...they had the fat necks as well. *I'm a skinny neck fan, but I've adapted well. *Feels better to me than almost all Fender necks I've tried...maybe it's the flat radius. *It's a bit more like a JPM, but has the standard wizard fretboard width.

Yeah. The J Custom necks are more JPM-like but definitely beefier. I love the JPM necks, but still found the J Custom necks uncomfortable. If the RG1880 neck wasn't maple bound, I probably would have sanded it down and been very happy.

Rick- Mine has a cream binding, and I've thought about getting just the back sanded down, but I don't have the guts.

RG3120 or RG1680???

I've got an RG1680. *It's by far my favorite guitar. *As everyone's pointed out already though, the neck is substantially bigger than most other Ibanezes. *I personally like it. *The DBK neck is MUCH thinner. *Ignore the info in the US catalog/website, it's wrong. *The DBK neck is 17mm at the nut, same as a Wizard. *The 19mm measurement you saw was for the VWH neck.

As for comparing it to other necks, I find it's not really that big. *It's only big in comparison to other Ibanez necks. *It feels about as thick as my PRS wide/thin neck. *(Try a PRS wide/fat, now that's a BIG neck!)

As Brent suggested, check out an RG2020, or even an S2020. *Those necks are about the same size. *

I'd highly recommend the 1680 for the HSH pickups alone. *But both are excellent guitars. *I'd choose by neck preference first though, a guitar can sound great, but that doesn't matter much if you don't want to play it, and the difference here is pretty major.

RG3120 or RG1680???

Thanks again guys. *Yeah, I think Im gonna stick with the rg3120 Prestige. *I just don't think I'm gonna get used to a neck that big and I probably wouldn't be able to try it out before I bought it since I'd have to order from Japan. *i just love the look of some of those Japanese Ibanezes though... soo much sweeter than the ones they got here... although I have yet to see the 3120 in person in deep red. *I might go to my local Sam Ash tonite and se if the got one in red. *Anyway... this is kinda off topic but I was looking on the Japanese site again this morning and was looking at the RGR770FM. *It says the hardware color is Cosmo White???? *Is it really white hardware or is it a chrome finish on it?

I played a 770FM the day I bought the 1680. *It was an OK guitar but nowhere near the looks or playability of the Prestige or JCustom series.

As for the hardware, it's not really white, it's more like satin chrome. *
